Hironobu Sakaguchi is arguably the preeminent figure among JRPG developers. He is best known for creating the Final Fantasy series during the late 1980s but has worked on other excellent JRPGs since then such as the Xbox 360 exclusive Lost Odyssey.
The Japanese Software Sales chart has been invaded this week by a host of new arrivals, including the long-awaited Wii-exclusive RPG from Mistwalker, The Last Story, which debuts on the listing at No. 1 with nearly 115 000 copies sold.
The first set of official screenshots for The Last Story has been released, and considering it’s a Wii exclusive game, the game is looking incredible, matching Monster Hunter Tri as far as detail and art direction is concerned.
Mistwalker’s next RPG is still expected to release this year (in Japan, at least), and it’s sure to be one to look out for.
You can see The Last Story in motion with a gameplay video over here, and find out further details on the game via El33tonline’s previous coverage, before venturing on to see the rest of the screenshots:
It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that the videogame industry would be at least slightly different without the contributions of one Hironobu Sakaguchi.
Games like Final Fantasy may have continued to spawn and evolve (and grow into the aimless genre they are today) without him, but the impact of Sakaguchi’s work on the industry as a whole can’t be discounted.
So when the 47 year-old game industry veteran of 23 years mentions that his current project may be his last one, it’s with a little gravity that one must receive such news.
Mistwalker’s next RPG, a Wii-exclusive title by the name of The Last Story, has been mired in mystery for some time now despite numerous displays of concept art, drops of gameplay details, and developer blogs emerging now and again.
Now though, with the release of a fantastic trailer for The Last Story, we’re able to see some terrific gameplay action, as well as some ‘in-game’ cutscenes from this 2010 Wii title.
I already said that The Last Story looks terrific, right? See for yourself in the debut gameplay and story trailer for the game below:
Mistwalker Corporation, the videogame development company helmed by Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, is currently working on an RPG called The Last Story which is due to release on the Wii by the end of the year, but other than snippets of concept art and rumours whispered on the wind, we haven’t heard much about the game.
Recently though, the official teaser website and previews of the game in Japanese videogame magazines have together woven a more concrete image of The Last Story, with more specific gameplay details coming to light.
Seems like it’s a good day for new game announcements, as Nintendo has revealed that a new Wii game is currently in development by Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey studio, Mistwalker.
Entitled The Last Story, a new Nintendo-hosted website has been set up with an official logo and some classy music, but other than that, next to nothing is known about the title, but judging by Mistwalker’s previous titles and (studio head) Hironobu Sakaguchi’s contributions to the videogame industry, it’s probably safe to say that The Last Story is an RPG.
