This week’s PlayStation Store update is chockablock with exciting new content and price promotions, from a massive ModNation Racers and thatgamecompany sale to the introduction of a number of classic SEGA titles such as Super Hang-On and The Revenge Of Shinobi.
The latest episode of the PlayStation Blogcast contains some good news for people who complained when Journey launched on the PlayStation Store two months ago with no trial or demo. This coming Tuesday, May 22nd, a free sample for Journey will appear on the US PlayStation Store, allowing PSN gamers to see what all the fuss is about before parting with $15 to buy the full version.
thagamecompany co-founder Jenova Chen has found great success in his approach to providing games that explore a more artistic, emotional side of gaming than the usual set of action title that line store shelves.
Thanks to a three-game publishing deal with Sony Computer Entertainment, thatgamecompany’s titles have gone from strength to strength beginning with the (almost literally) embryonic flOw in 2007, before moving on to Flower in 2009 and the critically and commercially acclaimed Journey in 2012.
Chen’s dealings with SCE and his studio’s success on PS3 has lead him to a few conclusions, including his belief that PS3 gamers are “more likely” to appreciate his games.
Jenova Chen, co-founder of Journey developer thatgamecompany, has revealed that his team’s next game will be announced sometime this year. Speaking in an interview with VG247, Chen also asserted that the developer was in negotiations with various publishers and could close a deal “in the next month.”
Few games are as screenshot friendly as Journey - practically every frame highlights the expert artistic design, colour composition and camera direction which went into making it such a beautiful-looking title. However, Journey’s appeal extends far beyond looks alone. Thatgamecompany has crafted a quite extraordinary experience which speaks to both the senses and the soul. Simply put, Journey is one of the most memorable gaming experiences money can buy.
As thatgamecompany begins work on its new game following the highly successful release of the studio’s Journey, it’s been revealed that Kellee Santiago is set to leave the company.
Santiago has been president of thatgamecompany since co-founding the studio with fellow University of Southern California game development student Jenova Chen, who together with a small team created ’Cloud’ and ’FlOw,’ their first experiments in emotion-based gaming.
Under the banner of thatgamecompany, Santiago has worked on the PlayStation Network release of FlOw, before the team began work on Flower and Journey.
I imagine my Journey began much the same as everybody else, but I had no way of knowing how it would end.
I awoke in the middle of a vast, shimmering desert with undulating sand dunes of every size dotting the landscape as far as the horizon would allow sight to see. My view was blocked by a particularly intimidating dune that looked like a perfect place from which to survey the land and once I clambered my way to the top (climbing through deep sand on a slope isn’t easy) I had the perfect vantage point - and that’s when I saw it:
The mountain and the light.
The beautiful and intriguing world of Journey will appear on PlayStation Network this week, but it’ll be up to you to discover its secrets and adventure through its seemingly endless lands containing ancient mysteries while on your path towards ‘the destination.’
Perhaps you’ll even find a companion along the way.
Watch the inspiring launch trailer for Journey and get ready for an adventure quite unlike any other:
If you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber you may have already sampled Journey, the latest emotive masterpiece from the envelope-pushing videogame studio, thatgamecompany.
You may have already experienced the wonderfully crafted imagery and you may have already challenged yourself to reach the summit of the mountain, your destination.
You also may have already heard the beautiful, rich tones of the game’s score and you just might have already encountered a stranger on your journey - another human being playing on the other side of the world.
All of these things and more are discussed in the latest developer diary for thatgamecompany’s Journey, and even if you’ve already experience them, the video is still worth a watch:
PlayStation Plus consistently delivers excellent discounts and a wealth of free content but the latest PS Plus perk has got to be right up there with the best of the bunch.
Few console titles are as graphically sumptuous as Journey. When a game’s screenshots look like they belong in an art gallery then you know you’re dealing with something very special indeed. I was fortunate enough to play the Journey Beta last year and can confirm that there’s a lot more to the game than beautiful visuals. Journey is a profoundly enriching experience that highlights the potential of games to carry a potent emotional charge.
Last week news emerged that Journey developer thatgamecompany was looking to recruit a Scalability Engineer to oversee the construction of a “full scale online service.”
Push Square recently published an interview with Jenova Chen, co-founder and creative director of thatgamecompany, that sheds new light on which platforms the studio is targeting for its next release.

Journey developer thatgamecompany has a reputation for blurring the lines between art and games to create unique, moving experiences that linger in your mind long after you put the controller down.
With development on Journey wrapped up, the studio is casting its gaze to its next ambitious project. A recent listing by thatgamecompany on recruitment website ‘Games Jobs Direct’ calls for a Scalability Engineer who will be responsible for building a “scalable online service.”
Following confirmation that thatgamecompany’s Journey would see a release exclusively on PlayStation 3 on March 15th, the studio has announced that the magical exploration-based adventure game will see a release a few days earlier on the US and European PlayStation Network.
Japanese gamers can begin traversing Journey’s mesmerising landscapes as early as next month, Famitsu has revealed. This PlayStation Network title by Flower creators thatgamecompany will be released in Japan on March 15th for ¥1200 (R120).
