EL33TONLINE: News tag archive: syndicate
Syndicate had everyone talking at El33tonline, and once the demo was released that discussion reached an even greater intensity. Upon launch we set up an El33tonline Syndicate on the Xbox 360, and if you’ve got a copy of the game we’d love for you to join us. Simply leave your gamertag details below and we’ll be sure to add you to the Syndicate.
If you think you know Syndicate because you played the classic PC strategy games back in the day, then you’re going to need to throw out that knowledge… save for the story.
Set against the backdrop of a dire neo-dystopian future, Syndicate takes place in a world where government rule has given way to ultimate global control by multinational corporations, or syndicates. Boardroom discussions have been supplanted by military posturing, industrial espionage involves the violent removal of data (and leaders) by competing companies, and human chip implants are real, dividing the world’s population of billions into the ‘haves’ and the ‘have-nots.’
Welcome to the new world of Syndicate.

Tomb Raider is doing it. SSX is doing it. Even Syndicate and Devil May Cry are doing it. Let’s do it. Let’s reboot a gaming franchise.
El33t’s Question of the Day is:
What game franchise do you think is most in need of a reboot?
This week marked a very important and exciting time in the videogame industry with the release of Sony’s PS Vita, the company’s latest and greatest gaming handheld!
The console’s release was celebrated here in South Africa with a lavish launch event and El33tonline was there to soak in the vibes - read Lisa and Wayne’s fantastic reports on the PS Vita launch to get an idea of the evening’s experience with photos and videos, and also don’t miss our highly extensive previous coverage of the handheld, bolstered by Tom’s excellent efforts over the last few weeks and months.
The release of the PS Vita means that no less than three (well, four) of El33tonline’s members will be getting to know the device a lot better this weekend, but you can find out what else we’ll be getting up to over the next two days below:
“If you are old enough to remember the classic Bullfrog Syndicate from almost twenty years ago,” writes Bryan, “you’ll recall it was an isometric real-time strategy game set in a dystopian future where your hired goons were cybernetically upgraded terminators in trench-coats.
“Your mission,” he continues, “was to establish worldwide domination for your syndicate, one small territory at a time, by any and all means necessary, which did not exclude slaughtering anyone standing in your way or standing in an adjacent city block. It was freaking awesome.”
“Syndicate, selected…”
It’s time for you to put points into upgrades and decide how best to build the ultimate ‘negotiating’ super soldier because Syndicate from EA and StarBreeze is launching this week!
Anything else exciting happening this week? Oh, only the small matter of the launch of Sony’s PS Vita!
What else is due for release around the world across digital and physical retail store shelves over the next few days? Let’s take a look:
EA and Starbreeze are set to reboot a classic videogame franchise this week with the release of Syndicate, a first-person shooter set in a neo-dystopian world when business is, indeed, war.
While the game features an entirely new singleplayer campaign giving you the chance to take on the guise of a superhuman soldier, it also contains an entire four-player co-operative campaign where you and your buddies and carve through nine missions inspired objective seen in the original Syndicate.
The Question of the Day is:
What about Syndicate has got you excited?
After years of discussion, loads of debate and lots of expended effort (and fighting), it’s been announced that the Australian government is finally ready to introduce an R18+ age rating for videogames in the country.
As it stands, the highest age rating for games in Australia is set at ‘MA15+’ which simply isn’t inclusive enough to account for games that feature more mature content and themes - an age rating that’s the basic equivalent of an ESRB ‘M,’ a PEGI ‘16’ and an FPB ‘16.’
As you watch the pumping launch trailer for Syndicate, a few thoughts may careen through your brain, some pleasant and others quite horrific.
Despite a deluge of screenshots and trailers, I must admit that I haven’t known what to expect with EA and Starbreeze Studios’ upcoming Syndicate, a game that shares the name and universe of a classic PC strategy action game from the 90’s, but little else.
Set in a neo-dystopian future where powerful conglomerates control and govern the world, industrial espionage is the order of the day, except in addition to stolen trade secrets and underhanded dealings these corporations make use of technologically enhanced agents to infiltrate their competing multinationals to carry out missions that could very well involve assassinating the CEO or president of a company.
Business is war, indeed.

When EA and Starbreeze Studios confirmed that a ‘re-invented’ first-person iteration of Syndicate was in the works, nostalgic gamers the world over immediately decried the publisher/developer pair’s lack of reverence for the original, classic cyberpunk strategy game series.
As the months went on, however, and more information, screenshots and videos came to light, gamers were slowly won over by the new vision for the franchise, while the recently released demo put a nail in the coffin of any doubts we may have had about the game’s additional four-player co-operative mode.
Syndicate is due for release in South Africa on February 24th across Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, and EA South Africa and El33tonline are giving you all a chance to win a copy of the tactical first-person action game on all platforms, and to stand in line to win we’re giving you a task worthy of an agent! Well… a rookie agent.
Head on over to El33tonline’s Syndicate Competition page to accept your task - you might soon be filling the technology-imbued boots of an agent in Syndicate.
The Durban heat is more draining than usual today so this introduction is going to be cut real short, everybody…
… but not before we invite you to let us know what you’re going to be keeping busy with this weekend. If you’re playing a game, seeing a movie or catching up on some reading (or sleep, even), tell us what you thought of your chosen activities on Monday morning, too.
Before this keyboard hosts a collapsed body, however, let’s take a look at what members of El33tonline will be up to over the next few days:
With the release of the Syndicate co-operative demo, we’ve been able to sample but a taste of the full game’s chip implant-enabled abilities that aim to improve a soldier’s combat effectiveness, but this infomercial for the powerful ‘DART 6’ chip provides a nice overview of the nasty (deadly) tricks you can play on enemies should you have the technology installed.
Persuasion, weapon malfunctions and temporary insanity? Highlighting threats, time augmentation and increased firepower? Child’s play with DART 6!
This week’s US PlayStation Store update is a case of quality over quantity. There’s not a whole lot of new content but the latest additions are still likely to get many a PlayStation fan paying the Store a visit to sample some of this week’s delights.
It’s what we’ve all been waiting for… Oh alright then, it’s what a vast majority of us have been waiting for! The chance to go hands-on with the first-person gadget-imbued gameplay of Syndicate from EA and Starbreeze Studios!
The demo for Syndicate has just dropped on Xbox LIVE and is available for download if you want to swap 723.61 megabytes of your bandwidth with The Internet. The ‘Net runs a tough bargain sometimes, but we think it’ll be well worth it!
You’ll also need to be an Xbox LIVE Gold member to get the Syndicate demo early over Marketplace, but if you do grab it, here’s what you can expect:
