At Capcom’s recent Captivate 2011 event, the publisher formally announced the existence of Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition for home platforms including Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, releasing ‘Summer’ this year.
Dubbed “the ultimate vision of Street Fighter,” Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition is the direct follow-up to Super Street Fighter IV, and includes brand new and returning characters, improved online modes, new balance fixes, an enhanced Replay Channel “and more.”
Legendary game developer, Capcom veteran and Mega Man steward Keiji Inafune has announced his resignation from the publisher and developer that he’s called home for 23 years.
At the end of the month, Inafune will leave Capcom and his position as Head of R&D Management Group, Consumer Games R&D Division and Contents Management Division.
In a blog post entitled ‘Sayonara,’ Inafune wrote:
“Tut-tut, looks like piracy,” said Capcom, and summarily cancelled the PC version of Super Street Fighter IV.
So, it wasn’t quite as simple as that, but Capcom has confirmed that PC gamers won’t be getting Super Street Fighter IV on their platform of choice. This news comes roughly five months following the release of the game on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and over a year after the title’s predecessor, Street Fighter IV, saw a release on the PC.
By now, most fans of the fighting game genre are able to admit that Capcom’s Street Fighter IV and Super Street Fighter IV titles have single-handedly (or… dual-handedly?) injected a huge amount of new excitement into a category of videogames that has steadily become more and more niche and inaccessible over the years, despite Namco’s continued entries to the Tekken and Soul Calibur series.
Now, with Street Fighter X Tekken, Capcom is set to bring a whole new crossover audience into the world of fighting games, as characters from both the Street Fighter and Tekken franchises collide in one universe and do battle for supremacy.
While screenshots and information has already been released for Street Fighter X Tekken, only now do we get to see the first in-game footage from the game, as Ryu and Chun-Li from Street Fighter, as well as Kazuya and Nina from Tekken, feature in an incredible debut gameplay video:
The diminutive stereoscopic 3D version of Capcom’s hit Super Street Fighter IV fighting title is looking quite close to its home console counterparts.
Although there’s obviously an enormous, yawning gap between the visual fidelity of the two versions, as well as big differences as far as exact effects and details on display are concerned, the basic elements are all there and when in motion (and seen in 3D), it’s possible that even these differences will melt away…
… but maybe I’m getting ahead of myself. You can decide for yourself by perusing the rest of the newly released screenshots for Super Street Fighter IV 3D Version (working title) for Nintendo’s 3DS, below:

Despite the recent launch of PlayStation Plus, there’s still a sizable amount of new content on the way to the European PlayStation Store a little later today, with a bunch of special price offers (PixelJunk Monsters! Sonic games!), demos (LEGO Harry Potter! Aqua Panic HD!) and downloadable content packages (Tiger Woods! DJ Hero! Super Street Fighter IV!).
The usual assortment of interesting themes, wallpapers, videos, downloadable games, extra DLC and Rock Band and Guitar Hero tracks will also make an appearance in a few hours on the European PlayStation Store, so head on down below to see the full list:
Capcom has revealed the line-up of games it plans on showing at E3 2010, which starts in earnest next week, from June 15th to 17th (although Microsoft will start proceedings early thanks to its Project Natal reveal).
While ‘only’ eight Capcom games will officially be at the show, the publisher promises “a couple surprises up our sleeves.”
Intriguing, but we’ll have to wait until the middle of next week to see what the company is hinting at. Check out the full list of Capcom games set to appear at E3 2010, below
This past week in Japan saw the DS title Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for the PSP continue their streak of sales dominance, both sitting atop Media Create’s Software Sales Chart for the region, at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively, despite massive drops in sales from the week previous.
When Capcom announced a new version of Street Fighter IV seven months after the game came out I had visions of the confusion created in me by the multitude of Street Fighter II games that seem to exist without any discernable differences (to my highly untrained eye, of course). That is to say, I imagined a game the same as Street Fighter IV with two new characters and some slight variations to colour palettes. But I was wrong, shamefully wrong. As more information came out it was clear that this wasn’t a minor upgrade but a full game in its own right. And then Capcom said it would be sold at a cheaper price (R500 in South Africa), so whether you own the original or not, this is the fighter to get. Only, if you do, please invest in a fight pad or stick (and more than one if you want to play with friends) – the Xbox 360 controller simply cannot do the game justice.

Whoa! Then there’s downloadable games in the form of World Of Outlaws Sprint Cars for PS3 and Harvest Moon: Hero Of Leaf Valley for PSP, demos of Split/Second for PS3 and ModNation Racers for PSP, as well as an absolute gigaton of downloadable content (DLC) for games like LittleBigPlanet, Bioshock 2, DJ Hero, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Nier, Super Street Fighter IV and Skate 3.
And we haven’t even discussed the wallpapers, videos, themes and Rock Band and Guitar Hero DLC!
Have a look through the full list of new content now available on the US PlayStation Store below:
Capcom’s full fiscal year 2009 financial results were released late last week, and as a result of a bare slate of new releases throughout the year, poor sales of its newer titles and release delays of major titles, profits fell 73 percent compared to the year previous, down to $23.6 million (¥2.2 billion).
Annual sales were also down 27 percent from last year, to $728.1 million (¥66.8 billion). Chief amongst the reasons for the slump in sales was the poor market performance of Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles on the Wii, and Bionic Commando and Dark Void on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
After a couple of slow week’s things are really heating up on the Japanese software chart with a number of high profile titles debuting in the Top 10 this week. Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 for the NDS is the best-selling new entry for the week ending the 2nd May with a whopping 624 000 copies.
The latest Media Create figures show that Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for the PSP also debuts strongly at number 2 with 434 000 copies. Meanwhile Super Street Fighter IV for the PS3 is new at number 3 with 81 000 copies, but New Super Mario Bros. Wii manages to beat off the competition from the Xbox 360 version of the game which only sells 28 000 copies to earn fifth place. Despite dropping two places to number 4 this week, New Super Mario Bros. continues to sell well with 44 000 copies shifted this week and life-to-date sales now standing at 3.76 million.
EA manages to break Ubisoft’s 4-week run in the top spot on the UK’s Software Chart, as 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa debuts at number 1. Not really surprising given that this is the World Cup themed version of the tenth biggest selling game ever in the UK, FIFA 10.
You might be interested to learn that during this week in the World Cup year of 2006, FIFA World Cup Germany 2006 represented 15% of FIFA 2006’s launch week. 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa performs similarly recording 14.6% of FIFA 10’s launch week, this despite only being released on the Xbox 360, PS3, PSP and Wii in comparison to seven formats in 2006.
Capcom has announced that Super Street Fighter IV has shipped one million units worldwide, and that’s just the intial shipment. The game hit shelves across the US on the 27th of April with Europe following on the 30th.
The new and improved version of the excellently updated Street Fighter IV will include new characters, ultra combos, and online modes, as well as the return of the classic bonus stages and retuned offline and online gameplay. Players will also be able to download alternate costumes for all characters available.
