“Moments ago, the team released a system update (aka Dash update) to all Xbox Live members,” writes Xbox mouthpiece Major Nelson. “Over the next few hours - or the next time you sign into Xbox LIVE after that - you’ll receive a prompt to accept this mandatory update.”
The Major
is alluding to the latest update to hit Xbox LIVE, the Summer Update, which adds, amongst other things, the new Games on Demand service, new Avatar clothing support, added Netflix functionality in the US, and generally more control over your favourite content.
The Major then goes on to point out a few things you should know about the update before getting your hopes up:
August 11th is when Xbox 360 owners can expect to receive Microsoft’s much touted Xbox LIVE Summer Update for the console, which will bring with it a few new features, including the Games on Demand service and branded clothing for your Xbox Avatars.
The Games on Demand service in particular is intriguing, seemingly taking the place of the old Xbox Originals section (where you could buy and download classic original Xbox games), now allowing users to buy and download classic games from the current generation of Xbox 360 titles, including Assassin’s Creed, Burnout Paradise and Mass Effect. More titles will be added over time.
Added functionality in this area will enable users to rank and sort their favourite games, including Xbox LIVE Indie Games.
