[Update] Recent comments from Sony’s Kaz Hirai allay fears over PlayStation Network moving towards a subscription-based service [Update End]

According to a slide from Sony’s recent media and investor conference, the PlayStation manufacturer may have hinted that their currently free-to-use PlayStation Network service could turn to a subscription service to net a “new revenue stream.”

While this is complete speculation at the moment, and could be referring to an additional service subscription (similar to the current video magazine, Qore), it could point the way to differentiated accessibility options in the same vein as Xbox 360’s Xbox LIVE, with its Gold (paid) and Silver (free) membership programmes, with separate access and functionality available to each class of subscriber.
