During Sony’s E3 2010 press conference which wrapped up earlier today, the company officially announced and detailed a PlayStation Network subscription service called PlayStation Plus.
After a bit of a quick-fire rumour regarding the possibility that the PlayStation Network may move towards a subscription model to increase revenue from the service, Sony Computer Entertainment chief, Kaz Hirai, has allayed fears that gamers will soon have to start paying for currently free services offered through PSN, such as online gaming. According to a slide from Sony’s recent media and investor conference, the PlayStation manufacturer may have hinted that their currently free-to-use PlayStation Network service could turn to a subscription service to net a “new revenue stream.”
While this is complete speculation at the moment, and could be referring to an additional service subscription (similar to the current video magazine, Qore), it could point the way to differentiated accessibility options in the same vein as Xbox 360’s Xbox LIVE, with its Gold (paid) and Silver (free) membership programmes, with separate access and functionality available to each class of subscriber.
