Star Trek Online LogoMassively multiplayer online game (MMOG) developer Cryptic recently announced that work has halted on a console version of the currently PC-only MMOG, Star Trek Online.

This announcement arrives after the news that the developer would not be delivering a console version of its other MMOG, Champions Online.

Speaking to videogame consumer website Videogamer.com, executive producer Craig Zinkievich said of the decision to halt development on Star Trek Online for consoles:

I have not played an MMO in the last nine years. The last one to get all my attention was Anarchy Online, and it was pretty good. But the amount of time needed to really make the best of an MMO is something I simply do not have anymore. With so many MMO’s out there I often get the urge to maybe give World of Warcraft a shot, or try my hand at City of Heroes. And when I first saw some screenshots of Aion I thought that maybe now is a good time to try it out.

Star Trek Online, however, is the game that will get all my attention. I have never considered myself a huge Trekker, but have really enjoyed some of the shows and movies, and the mythos that followed. Being an action junkie, the new reboot of the Star Trek universe was a really enjoyable action romp, unlike any other Star Trek movie. It is this same plotline that sets the scene for Star Trek Online.

Hot off of the official Star Trek Online site (well… it’s still warm) comes a video showing off just some of the “literally thousands of combinations” available to future players of Star Trek Online, when they’re given the opportunity to create their own alien race, or re-create a race of aliens from the Star Trek universe, in the Star Trek Alien Creator.

In a post on their site, the developers of Star Trek Online, Cryptic Studios have revealed the timeline in which players of the Star Trek themed massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) will be immersed.

Star Trek Online LogoThe most important bit of timeline information would be that the game begins in the year 2409, 30 years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis and Voyager… apparently. From Cryptic’s blog post:

“The unstable situation of the Romulans continues to be a source of concern for the Alpha and Beta quadrants.”

“The loss of agricultural planets now claimed by the Imperial Romulan Empire threatens Romulus with severe food shortages. Romulus’ power plants and factories cannot increase output without the heavy metals and dilithium that once flowed from Remus.”

The nerd saga continues.

The debut trailer for Star Trek Online was unveiled yesterday at the Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas. It’s looking mighty fine, especially for an MMOG.

Star Trek Online will feature a ton of environments as featured in the TV series, from the mysterious Mutara Nebula to the towers of Qo’noS. Players will be able to choose to play as either a Federation Captain or a Klingon Warrior, customising your ship and your crew. Star Trek Online is promised to be released on PC and consoles.

After watching the trailer, you can geek out some more at the Star Trek Online website or check out some screenshots in our previous coverage.

Want to partake in a bit of online Star Trek cosplay? Well, you can with the upcoming Star Trek massively multiplayer online game, in development at Cryptic Studios. A new website has just gone up with details on the game, apparently coming to PC ‘and consoles.’ Really?

Star Trek Online will allow players to become either a Federation Captain or a Klingon Warrior. Customisation options come in the form of outfitting your ship with various technologies, recruiting (and training) crew members, as well as unspecified player-generated content. You’ll be able to battle other ships in space, meet alien races or go down to the surface of planets for away missions. ‘Elegant domes of Starfleet Academy’ and the ‘Fire Caves of Bajor’ are also promised. They’d better deliver.
