While the launch of the 3DS may not have gone over quite as well as Nintendo (and Nintendo fans) had hoped, the 3D handheld has certainly picked up steam, and now here at the tail-end of 2011 there’s a great selection of quality titles available with many more on the way in the coming months.

The Nintendo 3DS released earlier this year to much fanfare as everybody looking for the next great gaming and technological feat from Nintendo clamoured to get hands and eyes on the device, and while there was a bit of a dearth of great games to go along with the handheld, here in the latter half of 2011 (and following an amazing price drop for the 3DS proper), there are more than enough titles to choose from!

To give you a taste of these fantastic new titles, Nintendo South Africa and El33tonline are giving away two copies of StarFox 64 3D and a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D!

Find out how to win one of these games at El33tonline’s competition page over here, but be sure to brush up on some other 3DS titles (like Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land) - that’s all we’ll say.

StarFox 64 is often regarded as the best game in the StarFox series of games, and it’s easy to see why. It’s a very tightly designed game with a lot of action and choices compacted into a short playing time with a huge amount of replayability. The transition to the 3DS is impressive: in the process of porting from the Nintendo 64 the game has received a lot of graphics improvements as well as the addition of 3D. Those looking for an old-school shooter with variety, complexity and minimal story - this is your game.

This week’s Media Create software chart has an incredible seven new releases in the top ten, and they’re all packed like sardines ahead of the older titles.

Occupying the number one spot is the PS3 version of Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu 2011 - a baseball game from Konami featuring super players and simple graphics. The publisher will surely be pleased that collective sales of the game (the PSP version also did well) came to over 200 000 copies in its first week.

Even in this day and age of internet scoops, Nintendo managed to surprise us with a few announcements at the publisher’s E3 press conference this year.

At the top of the list was the Wii U, Nintendo’s next home console and the successor to the Wii. The tablet-like controller for the Wii U has a touchscreen, dual analogue circle pads, motion controls, speakers, a microphone and a camera. The controller screen can be used instead of or along with HDTV.

One of my all-time favourite games (of all time) was the original Star Fox on the SNES because it was my first foray into ‘3D’ console gaming, and used all kinds of special graphical tricks to immerse players in its intensely action-oriented flight-based gameplay.

After a few iterations of the Star Fox series on the Nintendo 64, Gamecube and DS, the series will perform a different kind of 3D trick on the 3DS, only this time the experience will be that much more immersive.
