“If you are old enough to remember the classic Bullfrog Syndicate from almost twenty years ago,” writes Bryan, “you’ll recall it was an isometric real-time strategy game set in a dystopian future where your hired goons were cybernetically upgraded terminators in trench-coats.
“Your mission,” he continues, “was to establish worldwide domination for your syndicate, one small territory at a time, by any and all means necessary, which did not exclude slaughtering anyone standing in your way or standing in an adjacent city block. It was freaking awesome.”
As you watch the pumping launch trailer for Syndicate, a few thoughts may careen through your brain, some pleasant and others quite horrific.
Despite a deluge of screenshots and trailers, I must admit that I haven’t known what to expect with EA and Starbreeze Studios’ upcoming Syndicate, a game that shares the name and universe of a classic PC strategy action game from the 90’s, but little else.
Set in a neo-dystopian future where powerful conglomerates control and govern the world, industrial espionage is the order of the day, except in addition to stolen trade secrets and underhanded dealings these corporations make use of technologically enhanced agents to infiltrate their competing multinationals to carry out missions that could very well involve assassinating the CEO or president of a company.
Business is war, indeed.

With the release of the Syndicate co-operative demo, we’ve been able to sample but a taste of the full game’s chip implant-enabled abilities that aim to improve a soldier’s combat effectiveness, but this infomercial for the powerful ‘DART 6’ chip provides a nice overview of the nasty (deadly) tricks you can play on enemies should you have the technology installed.
Persuasion, weapon malfunctions and temporary insanity? Highlighting threats, time augmentation and increased firepower? Child’s play with DART 6!
It’s what we’ve all been waiting for… Oh alright then, it’s what a vast majority of us have been waiting for! The chance to go hands-on with the first-person gadget-imbued gameplay of Syndicate from EA and Starbreeze Studios!
The demo for Syndicate has just dropped on Xbox LIVE and is available for download if you want to swap 723.61 megabytes of your bandwidth with The Internet. The ‘Net runs a tough bargain sometimes, but we think it’ll be well worth it!
You’ll also need to be an Xbox LIVE Gold member to get the Syndicate demo early over Marketplace, but if you do grab it, here’s what you can expect:
EA has announced today that a demo for Syndicate will be making its way out over Xbox LIVE and the PlayStation Network this month to give us all a taste of the game’s four-player co-operative gameplay.
This year’s first-person entry to the Syndicate franchise is primed to become one of the first notable releases of 2012, and features an extensive singleplayer mode imbued with a futuristic, brutal sci-fi plot and tons of play style customisations.
What will you be doing when you’re not playing the campaign? Indulging in the four-player co-operative missions, of course.
As an agent in EA and Starbreeze Studio’s Syndicate, you’ll have access to special DART technology thanks to a chip implanted in your brain - that may sound horrific, but in this far-flung technology-infused future, you’ll need all the help you can get in order to gain the upper-hand on your enemies!
“19 weapons, 87 attachments and 25 upgrades - the perfect complement to your already deadly abilities.”
That’s what you can look forward to in Syndicate from EA and Starbreeze studios, a first-person entry to the series of classic cyberpunk action strategy games, and after enjoying extensive looks at the co-operative missions included in this new title, we can now relish a few glimpses at the included arsenal and combat options of Syndicate with a trailer and brand new screenshots:
As you’ll soon see in this Syndicate video showcasing eight minutes of intense four-player co-operative action, friends help friends attack and annihilate enemies while on a mission to extract an important computer chip from the neck of a supersoldier - even if that help entails snapping necks, shooting people in the face, healing one another and jumping and sliding about the place like an acrobat.
It’s just what friends do.
We don’t know if you’ve noticed, but the new Syndicate game is fully first-person.
If you ever had any doubt of this fact, all you’ll need to do is glimpse the latest (very bright and colourful) screenshots for EA and Starbreeze Studios’ next game, and you’ll see what we’re talking about.
No more isometric action for you, but the squad-based aspect of the classic cyber punk franchise is still fully present and accounted for, as the latest trailer for Syndicate so deftly demonstrates, with fantastic four-player co-operative gameplay on show.
Looks incredible:
EA and Starbreeze have released a batch of new screenshots and two new trailers for Syndicate, the first-person version of the classic Syndicate series of tactical action games.
After EA and Starbreeze finally confirmed what gamers the world over already knew by formally announcing the existence of a first-person version of the classic Syndicate series of tactical action games, a new batch of screenshots has recently made its way into the world.
EA and developer Starbreeze (The Darkness, Chronicles of Riddick) have confirmed the rumours and announced that a new game based in the brutal, sci-fi Syndicate franchise is currently in development and due for an early 2012 release on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
EA has managed to acquire the rights to develop games based on Robert Ludlum’s series of novels, including the Jason Bourne novel and film series, after the rights to the Bourne license, previously held by Sierra and Vivendi, reverted back to the Ludlum Estate after Activision Blizzard dropped the license as a result of the Activision/Vivendi merger.
In addition, EA have signed up Starbreeze Studios (Chronicles of Riddick, The Darkness) to develop a new title based on the Jason Bourne license. Group vice president of marketing at EA Games Label Mike Quigley said:
“Robert Ludlum’s Jason Bourne is the most exciting action hero to emerge in decades, thrilling audiences around the world. EA is excited to enter into a long-term relationship with Ludlum Entertainment, bringing the action, intrigue and intensity of Robert Ludlum’s fiction to life for casual and core gamers around the globe.”
Matt Wolf, currently serving as creative adviser for the Robert Ludlum Estate, will assist EA and oversee “creative development, production, and positioning” in the creation of any potential games based on the Bourne license, hopefully resulting in a series of games that remains true to the license.
