During a somewhat quiet month for videogame releases, the NPD Group has announced videogame software and hardware sales figures in the US for the month of April, revealing an incredible 26 percent drop in overall revenues for the region compared to the same period last year.

Good news for Ubisoft was hidden in the bleak April report, as the publisher’s Splinter Cell: Conviction topped the software sales chart for the month, ahead of evergreen Nintendo titles and the blockbuster God of War III.

EA manages to break Ubisoft’s 4-week run in the top spot on the UK’s Software Chart, as 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa debuts at number 1. Not really surprising given that this is the World Cup themed version of the tenth biggest selling game ever in the UK, FIFA 10.

You might be interested to learn that during this week in the World Cup year of 2006, FIFA World Cup Germany 2006 represented 15% of FIFA 2006’s launch week. 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa performs similarly recording 14.6% of FIFA 10’s launch week, this despite only being released on the Xbox 360, PS3, PSP and Wii in comparison to seven formats in 2006.

Despite a 46% drop in sales, Ubisoft’s Splinter Cell: Conviction has managed to hold onto the top spot on Chart Track’s UK Software Sales Chart this past week, while the publisher’s other chart dominating game, Just Dance (sales down 31%), remains at No. 2.

When a game series reaches the 5th installment, chances are you would have been there, seen that, and done that. It takes a special type of developer to throw everything out of the window and start over, often losing fans because the game changed too much. Developers would far too often rely on the winning formula to release a boring update to a series. Ubisoft Montreal was about to do just that. Thankfully they realized at some point during development that the same recipe will not work. They then started all over again, and rather than baking the same recipe, decided to refine it using the best ingredients. They added a bit more spice and a lot of flair. They added some time and let it bake a little longer. Was the end result worth the wait? Or was this concoction a flop?

Ubisoft LogoStarting with the release of Shaun White Skateboarding this holiday season, Ubisoft is to begin including in-game, digital instructions and instructions manuals with the publisher’s range of physical disc-based PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 games.

This initiative will be in an effort to save production costs on games and, more importantly, save the trees that are used to create paper manuals currently found in all videogame boxes.

Ubisoft must be pretty pleased with the results of Chart Track’s UK Software Sales Chart this week, as not only is the Wii-exclusive title Just Dance still going strong at No. 2, but the publisher’s newly released action stealth game, Splinter Cell: Conviction, now holds the No. 1 spot on the chart.

This is the first time that games from Ubisoft have ever occupied both the No. 1 and No. 2 slots on the UK sales chart, and the first time that the company has ever occupied the No. 1 position on the chart two weeks in a row with two different titles. Quite a feat!

The much-anticipated, long-in-development Splinter Cell: Conviction releases today in North America on Xbox 360, finally allowing franchise fans to once again step into the stealth-action boots of series-long protagonist Sam Fisher, as he embarks on a journey of vengeance and, indeed, conviction.

When the game does become available (after a series of unfortunate delays), we’ll finally be able to get our hands on the full, unfettered stealth-action vision that developers Ubisoft wish to deliver, with a few evolutionary (and some may argue, revolutionary) features thrown into the singleplayer and multiplayer campaigns.

While none of those features (such as ‘last known position’ or the use of image projections for story exposition) are shown in the newly released launch trailer for Splinter Cell: Conviction, it’s still well worth a watch, and if the game isn’t on your radar on the minute, the video may just inspire you to look a little further:
