To follow up on last year’s rock solid Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, Marvel Entertainment and Activision Publishing have together announced a new game in the Spider-Man franchise going by the name of Spider-Man: Edge of Time.

This time, our friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man will apparently be faced with his most daunting task ever: Saving Spider-Man!

The NPD Group has released its sales report of the videogame industry in the US for the month of September, sadly the first of its kind to not include exact unit sales.

NPD no longer reports the unit sales figures for the Top 5, neither does the Top 10 show a single title on a single platform but rather the combined sales of an individual title across all platforms.

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions is a very good Spider-Man game. In fact, it’s probably the best one I’ve played. It’s a more focused, stage-based game than we’re used to in the Spider-Man franchise with a decent combat system, but what makes it really fun is the quality writing, cool villains and entertaining voice acting.

Despite a 58% drop in sales compared to the week previous, 2K’s mobster-themed action game Mafia II has managed to remain at the top of Chart Track’s UK Software Sales listing for the third week in a row, fending off advances from Ubisoft’s HAWX 2, as well as a host of new releases.

Is this the next big hope for videogames based on comic book characters? Can Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions reach the lofty quality bar set by a game like Batman: Arkham Asylum?

Comic book legend Stan Lee is lending his voice to Activision’s upcoming action adventure game starring Lee’s own creation, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, and in a seemingly rare interview with the luminary, Lee has provided his thoughts on the character of Spider-Man as well as his opinion of the game itself.

The forth and final Spider-Man dimension was recently revealed for Activision’s upcoming Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions (it’s Ultimate Spider-Man… spoiler alert, I guess), and now that this mystery has been solved, we’re probably going to get showered in a deluge of new media.

Starting now.

Activision has released two quick (but highly impressive) trailers for Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, showcasing fights between Spider-Man and two of his enemies: the brutish Juggernaut and the gruesome Scorpion:

To date, we’ve only seen three versions of the ultimate neighbourhood watchman, comprising iterations known as ‘Amazing Spider-Man,’ ‘Spider-Man Noir’ and ‘Spider-Man 2099,’ each with their own abilities and graphical styles.

Now, Activision has revealed the fourth and final version of Spider-Man set to appear in Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. Who is he and from which Marvel universe does he hail?

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions Box Art Small (PS3)The last time we caught up with the friendly neighbourhood web-slinger, we discovered that Spider-Man 2099 was the third addition to the variety of playable Spider-People due to make an appearance in Activision’s upcoming game, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions.

What we saw last time, however, were only screenshots of Spider-Man 2099 – still images that couldn’t possibly tell us what to expect from this version of the superhero, and what kind of abilities we’ll be able to wield while taking his guise.

The trailer below fixes all of that, additionally showing us what kinds of enemies we’ll be fighting in the 2099 universe.

A total of four interpretations of Spider-Man are set to be included in the upcoming Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions game, but we don’t know the identities of all four.

We know about ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ and ‘Spider-Man Noir,’ and now Activision has put us out of our anticipation misery by revealing the third iteration of the superhero that will be showing up in the game – Spider-Man 2099:

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions will see players taking control of four different versions of the web-slinging superhero across four different universes, as he tries to find an artefact called the ‘Tablet of Order and Chaos’ which has torn a rift in time and space, causing havoc and shattering dimensions.

Hence the title of the game. Clever, eh?

Only two playable versions of Spider-Man have been announced just yet, with the ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ and ‘Spider-Man Noir’ already confirmed for the game, but until the next two versions are revealed, we’ll have to be content to watch a newly released trailer showing off the villains included in Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, which features healthy doses of in-game footage:

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions is a fan’s next best hope for a great videogame based on the web-slinging superhero, and if this newly unearthed video showcasing scenes from the game is anything to go by, those fans are in for a treat!

Split up into two segments showing gameplay from the classic ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ and then ‘Spider-Man Noir’ sections of Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, the video gives us a few good looks at the various ways Spider-Man can navigate around environments, beat up the bad guys, and solve puzzles, with some sneaking sections thrown in for good measure.

It’s all looking very promising and on track for the game’s release in September this year. You can watch all of that gameplay goodness below:

It seems Spider-Man is leaving his multi-coloured garb behind in his next videogame outing, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, for more dreary, steam punk attire… well, at least in one dimension of the game, that is.

In the other dimension, he’ll be the regular, friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man we all know and… know.
