Is Spider-Man: Web of Shadows a good game, or a good Spider-Man game? There’s a big difference, one statement implying that, in the larger ecosystem of the videogame world, Web of Shadows holds up as a valuable interactive experience, while the other implies that, in the considerably smaller ecosystem of Spider-Man games, Web of Shadows is as good as, if not better than, any previous entries to the series. As you swing, collect, punch, kick, combo attack, upgrade and absorb the story throughout the 10+ hours of adventure, you may come to the conclusion that, while the developers have created solid foundations for a good game, it’s all a bit empty and padded, resulting in what most would call a good Spider-Man game, but rather mediocre interactive entertainment.

Imagine you’re Marvel. I mean, imagine you’re someone who works for Marvel, or you’re a director of the company. You have this little comic book called Spider-Man that has been quite popular over the years. In 2002 you release a movie that breaks all kinds of records on its way to a top 5 finish on the US all time box office charts, and follow it up with two more $300m plus movies. Spider-Man, friends, is one of the biggest movie series of all time. Why then, has it failed to light up the gaming world?

It must be said first of all that there are no comic-to-movie-to-game adaptations that have lit up the video gaming world. In fact, from a brief, non-exhaustive study of the publicly available numbers, Spider-Man is the most successful of them with over three previous games that have sold over a million copies on a single platform (all PlayStation platforms). But I can’t say this is evident in the games themselves – at heart the gameplay has been decent if you like button mashers, and the swinging is fun, but the lack of polish detracts so much from the experience it’s no wonder it isn’t far more successful.

The next Spider-Man game, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, has quite the features list, including the ability to switch between Spider-Man’s red or black suit as necessary, and the option to ally with a host of Marvel heroes or villains, which will help determine the story’s direction and outcome.

A bunch of new screenshots have been released, featuring one of the story’s characters, Black Cat… and Spider-Man of course. The screenshots also allude to the game’s combat system, as battles may start on the ground, but continue up the sides of buildings and end high in the rooftops. Smart stuff.

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is currently in development, but can be expected later this year on all platforms - more screenshots below.
