So the rumours were true: Corporate Executive Officer and Executive Deputy President of Sony Corporation and president of the Consumer Products and Services Group (i.e. head of Sony Computer Entertainment) has today been named president and CEO of Sony Corporation.
Current president and CEO Sir Howard Stringer will remain in his roles until April 1st, at which time Hirai will officially take on his new duties.
Hirai said of his promotion:
The recent buzz around videogame internet circles has been the reported planned announcements of both the next Xbox from Microsoft, as well as the PlayStation 4 from Sony, at E3 in June this year.
At least one of these consoles will definitely not see a showing at the expo.
According to a report on industry site Develop, ‘trusted sources’ have confirmed that several of Sony Computer Entertainment’s internal studios are currently working on games for the company’s PlayStation 4.
Well that was weird.
It was roughly five hours ago that the PlayStation Network mysteriously became unavailable to what seemed like a large collection of users, but the service has now just as mysteriously rumbled back to life.
[Update]
The PlayStation Network has returned to full operation! Details over here.
[End of Update]
After the PlayStation Network mysteriously ceased operations for a number of users a little earlier today, the official PlayStation Blogs have been trying to keep everyone up-to-date with regards to when we can expect the service to be fully functional again.
Here’s the latest word from the European PlayStation Blog:
[Update No. 3]
The PlayStation Network has returned to full operation! Details over here.
[End of Update No. 3]
Lightbox Interactive president Dylan Jobe has today posted on the PlayStation Blogs to unveil a brand new gameplay video showcasing the expansive combat opportunities featured in Starhawk, a multiplayer (and singleplayer) game of epic proportions.
Watch below as an orbital space station is built up before your very eyes and various factions battle for control while engaging in astounding dogfights around hostile environments (phew!):
Sony has denied all reports of a delay for the PS Vita, but it’s clear that the company was originally targeting a holiday 2011 launch in as many Western territories as possible. This is the time of year when people are more willing than usual to part with their hard-earned cash, and so a shiny new Sony portable on store shelves would seem like an enticing Christmas present proposition to many.
Why then did Sony push back the PS Vita to early 2012 in the West? It’s a question I’ve mulled over many times while resigning myself to the fact that I won’t be able to purchase a PSV this year.

The massive ‘Summer Sale’ on the European PlayStation Store continues this week with enormous helpings of special price offers on all kinds of classic and excellent PlayStation Network games, including TerRover, Bionic Commando and its sequel, downloadable content for some EA games, as well as a few PSOne titles and a handful of minis.
But what’s new this week?
The image above should clue you in, but we’ll spell it out for your just in case: The first-person multiplayer shooter Section 8: Prejudice will soon become available for purchase and download on the European PlayStation Store, while you’ll also be able to get your zombie jollies with Dead Block, too (read El33tonline’s review over here).
What other content is set to appear on the European PlayStation Store in only a matter of hours? The full list is as follows:
This week’s U.S. PlayStation Store update is an exciting one for LA Noire fans. I was under the impression that the game wouldn’t be getting any new cases for quite some time, so I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw “The Consul’s Car” appear on this week’s list.
This downloadable content (DLC) for the Traffic Desk appears to be a North American, PlayStation-3 exclusive for the time being, and weirdly enough there’s absolutely no mention of it on the official LA Noire DLC website.
What’s the highlight of this week’s European PlayStation Store content publish? Thanks to the currently-on-the-go PlayStation Network Summer Sale… everything!
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and its partners have slashed prices on tons and tons of downloadable games and content, with titles from PopCap, EA, Capcom, Telltale and more going for cheaps, while a range of mini and PSOne titles are also enjoying special price offers.
Be sure to check out Limbo, too, which will (finally) become available to PlayStation 3 owners in Europe.
Find out what other tasty content (and get that full list of discounted games) will be showing up on the European PlayStation Store in just a few hours:
The last few years have seen thousands of indie games appearing on iOS devices and mobile phones, some of which have gone on to make millions for their developers. Xbox 360 has an indie games section on Xbox LIVE marketplace but Sony’s current consoles – PlayStation 3 and PSP - have never really hosted games by ‘garage developers’ in a meaningful way.
That’s all set to change, according to comments made by president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS) Shuhei Yoshida during a recent interview with Develop.
In just a few hours, the European PlayStation Store will be updated with a gigantic amount of new content comprising a special ‘Summer’ sale on a collection of downloadable EA games, opportunities to purchase and download full PlayStation 3 games, and indulge is masses of add-on content for games like DiRT 3, MotorStorm Apocalypse, Mortal Kombat and LittleBigPlanet 2, amongst others.
But do you know what else you’ll find on the European PlayStation Store today? Full access to the currently-on-the-go Uncharted 3 multiplayer beta!
Find out what other brand new and exciting content is scheduled to show up on the store today with the full list below:
If you’ve been considering buy a TV capable of stereoscopic 3D for some more immersive gaming, but you haven’t found enough good reasons to make the leap, the PlayStation Blog has tried to help you out with your purchasing decision!
Sid Shuman has posted up an impressive list of PlayStation 3 games, both available now and releasing in the next few months, that support (or will support) stereo 3D, meaning if you do decided to invest in a 3D TV, you’ll at least have something to play on it.
Here’s the list:
As usual, you can expect megatons of exciting new downloadable content over PlayStation Network when the European PlayStation Store receives its latest update in just a few hours.
This content includes new additions to games like LA Noire, Mortal Kombat and Killzone 3, full games like Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit and American McGee’s Alice, and demos for Dungeon Siege III and… Sonic Generations?
Correct. Starting tomorrow, European PlayStation Store browsers will be able to snag a demo for SEGA’s upcoming Sonic T. Hedgehog game, Sonic Generations… but only starting tomorrow, you hear?
Here’s the rest of the content you can expect on the European PlayStation Store later today:
