The rumour mills have been doing overtime lately with information about a new, unannounced installment in the Sonic series circulating the internet. Sega has now officially announced Sonic Unleashed, which is due to be released on the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and PS2 later this year.
After the evil Dr Eggman breaks the world apart, Sonic must reassemble it by retrieving the power of the chaos emeralds. The game promises to deliver “an unusual situation that will challenge him in ways never before seen” as he races against time, completing various stages over seven broken continents of the world.
Sonic Unleashed allows gamers to engage Sonic in different ways during the day and night time levels and participate in combat fighting as well as run at high speeds in classic Sonic style. The game features four new modes to highlight Sonic’s speed skills as well as new combat, movement and functional abilities.
Developed by studio Sonic Team, Sonic Unleashed is built on a new engine, aptly dubbed the ‘Hedgehog Engine.’ The engine has been under development for three years and introduces seamless 3D to classic 2D camera transitions, allowing classic Sonic 2D game play to be combined with next gen capabilities.
