There hasn’t been an abundance of great platformers this generation, which is strange considering how well suited current console technology is to delivering a fast, responsive, surface-hopping experience.

Sonic Generations should tip the scales in the right direction when it comes to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 during the latter part of this year. There are also unconfirmed rumours roaming the internet that 3DS and PC versions of the title are in the works.

Late last week SEGA teased Sonic fans of the world with a trailer for an upcoming game widely believed to be the next high-definition outing for the blue speedster.

Today, SEGA has gone and neatly confirmed these beliefs by officially announcing Sonic Generations, a new 2D and 3D platform game for both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, due for release this holiday season.

From the looks of the debut trailer and screenshots for Sonic Generations, we may just be able to get excited for this one (“Don’t start that again!” – My Conscience):

SEGA has just released a teaser trailer for the next PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 Sonic game to give us a clue about the blue speedster’s upcoming escapades.

The video features Sonic racing around what looks to be an arctic or concrete version of a traditional Sonic environment, dashing through loop-the-loops, jumping up ledges and careening into caves.

The US PlayStation Store update is back to its usual healthy state this week after a bit of an E3 drought, now packing a megaton of special price offers on a bunch of Sonic games… you know, that blue hedgehog fella’?

A new episode of Sam & Max is now available entitled ‘They Stole Max’s Brain,’ while all kinds of cool downloadable content (DLC) has appeared for a range of different games, including MAG, Just Cause 2, Red Dead Redemption and Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

In other exciting news, Rock Band fans can now get all of the ‘Miley Cyrus’ they can handle, with a new track pack featuring the songstress’ ‘hits,’ while the usual assortment of interesting themes, wallpapers and videos also make an appearance.

Sonic The HedgehogSEGA has announced that the company is celebrating the 19th birthday of its speedy blue mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog, with an enormous range of special price offers on digital Sonic and SEGA games.

Starting today, price promotions will run on three different gaming platforms - the PlayStation Network, the iPhone and then on Xbox LIVE Marketplace – over a certain period of days, depending on that platform.

LittleBigPlanet Sonic the Hedgehog Costumes

According to SiliconEra, LittleBigPlanet players will soon be able to dress up their Sackboy as one of the characters from the world of Sonic the Hedgehog, as SEGA and Sony bring Sonic, Sonic the Werehog, Tails, Dr. Eggman, and Knuckles costumes to the PS3 title.

Reportedly available individually or as a pack, these costumes are said to be arriving in mid-December, just in time for the holidays!
