Madden NFL 11 - Xbox LIVE Box ArtNPD Group, the sales tracking and research firm that brings us news of the US videogame industry’s monthly revenue, has released a list of the top twenty best-selling titles for the month of August, extending the top ten list revealed in the company’s initial report.

And wouldn’t you know it - Nintendo (that plucky little upstart videogame developer from Japan) has once again conquered the list as no less than ten Nintendo platform titles appear on the chart, seven of which were produced and developed at the publisher.

[Update] You can find an extended list of best-selling software, which includes the top twenty selling titles for the month of August, over here. [End of Update]

Xbox 360 PartyThe NPD Group has released the latest round of sales figures for the videogame industry in the US for the month of August 2010, and unfortunately the research and sales tracking firm doesn’t have especially good news for us number nuts, announcing that industry revenue in the region dropped by ten percent compared to August 2009.

Overall sales in the industry stood at $818.9 million for August, down $91.4 million from the same period last year. Year-to-date, industry revenue accumulated during 2010 is roughly $720 million behind 2009 during the same timeframe - from January to August 2010, the industry has generated $8.37 billion.

NPD analyst Anita Frazier noted:

Sales tracking and research firm NPD has released a list of the top twenty best-selling videogames for the month of July 2010, confirming what we knew about the top ten (with some extra sales figures), but adding in the remaining ten entries to the chart.

New Xbox 360 - SmallUS sales tracking and research group NPD has revealed sales figures for the region’s videogame industry during the month of July 2010, and thanks to an incredible surge in Xbox 360 console sales, revenue for the month reached $846.5 million, which represents a decline of only 1% compared to the same month in 2009, when revenue reached $850.6 million.

Hardware sales then were led comfortably by the Xbox 360, ahead of perennial market leaders the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii – the first time Microsoft has managed such a feat since the release of Halo 3 in September of 2007.

On the software side, NCAA Football 11 from EA was the best-selling game for July, although interestingly enough, Blizzard Entertainment’s StarCraft II on the PC outsold EA’s title, but due to the nature of NPD’s reporting (i.e. not comparing PC and console software data), StarCraft II has to celebrate its victory alone.

Following the release of similar sales lists compiled for the US and Japan, we now know the top ten best-selling games in the UK for the first six months of 2010.

Just Dance

In a list compiled by videogame trade website and magazine MCV, Ubisoft’s Just Dance emerges as the clear victor in terms of raw unit sales, but when you start taking the relative time of availability into consideration, Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption looks to be the more powerful competitor…

… then again, Just Dance is only available on one platform (the Wii) and released in late 2009, meaning it’s got the potential of a much longer sales tail than Red Dead Redemption…

In any event, the full top ten list of best-selling games in the UK for the first six months of 2010 is as follows, including the revelation that Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is currently outselling Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in the region:

Last week a list was released revealing the top-selling videogames for the first half of 2010 in Japan. To not many industry observers’ surprise, New Super Mario Bros. Wii appeared at the top of that list, followed by a host of other games that released in 2009.

Sales tracking and research firm NPD has now released a similar list, only for the US, revealing which titles have been raking the charts during the first six months of 2010… and wouldn’t you know it, New Super Mario Bros. Wii also appears at the top of NPD’s list.

But wait! This list only covers individual platforms, spreading out respective sales of each title over single consoles instead of lumping them all together (i.e. combined sales of the PS3 and Xbox 360 version of a game).

NPD has a list for this ‘lumping’ of platforms too, or as the firm eloquently calls it, ‘Combined Platform Sales.’ Which game topped this list?

New Xbox 360 - SmallAccording to sales tracking firm NPD, the US videogame industry experienced another year-over-year decline, this time to the tune of 6%, falling to total revenues of $1.1 billion for June 2010 as compared to June 2009.

This decline was mainly due to soft performance in the software market with relatively little new releases compared to May, while the hardware market did its best to keep sales ticking over as revenues in this segment rose year-over-year thanks to impressive increases in unit sales for all consoles over last month.

In particular, the Xbox 360 outsold the Wii in the US in June, in part due to the release of the new, slimmer Microsoft console, while Red Dead Redemption and Super Mario Galaxy 2 continued to dominate software sales in the region.

Despite the releases of a tremendous amount of highly anticipated software for the month of May in the form of Red Dead Redemption, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Alan Wake and UFC Undisputed 2010, revenues in the US videogame industry were down 5% as compared to the same period last year, falling to $823.5 million.

This is largely due to a decline in hardware sales, with revenues dropping to $241.5 million, which represents a 20% year-over-year decline. While accessory sales were up 3 percent, to $115.7 million, the collection of games mentioned above could only help software sales climb a measly 4 percent from May last year, up to $466.3 million.

Hot on the heels of NPD’s recently released sales results for the videogame market in the US for April 2010, the sales tracking organisation has released a list of the top twenty best selling games for the month, expanding on the top ten shown in its initial report.

NPD GroupAs we already know, Splinter Cell: Conviction heads up the chart with 486 100 units sold in April, a bunch of evergreen Nintendo titles fill in the top ten and God of War III appears at No. 5 with 180 300 units sold. But what about the rest of the titles in the top twenty?

According to the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) in the UK, there was absolutely no stopping Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (tell us something we don’t know) in 2009, not only in terms of pure software sales, but overall entertainment media as well, outselling chart-topping music albums and blockbuster movies to become the best performing piece of entertainment in the UK last year.

First, let’s look at the list of best selling videogames in the UK last year, according to ERA:
