Sega’s Phantasy Star Universe for the PSP debuts in the top spot with 342 000 copies followed by Nintendo’s Rhythm Heaven Gold for the DS with 213 000 copies. Square Enix’s Dragon Quest V for the DS sold 112 000 copies to secure third place, dropping after two weeks spent at number 1. The PS3 version of Namco Bandai’s Soul Calibur IV enters the charts at number 4 with 75 000 copies. Namco Bandai’s Gundam Battle Universe for the PSP moves down seven places to number 10 with 21 000 copies.
Chart Track have released the latest UK game sales charts for the week ending August 2nd and, surprise surprise, Soul Calibur IV, the latest in the Soul Calibur fighting series from Namco, has hit the number one spot in its first week.
It seems it’s proving slightly more popular with the 360 crowd, as 56% of sales were attributed to that console. It’s also apparently the first time since Soul Calibur 2, in 2003, that the series has hit the number one spot.
It looks like Lego Indiana Jones, however, fell from 5th place to 10th place, while Big Beach Sports swapped places with it, moving up from 10 to 5th this week. Otherwise, the chart remains mostly unchanged with some downwards movement to make way for Soul Calibur. The top-ten chart is as follows:

- 05 - Big Beach Sports

The US video game industry continued to prosper in June, boasting total sales of $1.69 billion, 53% higher than June 2007. Hardware was up 54% at $615.1 million while software also experienced a bumper month with $872.6 million.
NPD analyst Anita Frazier commented “The video games industry continues to perform in the face of an ever-increasingly difficult economic environment as many turn to more in-home entertainment. Even if growth slows over the back half of 2008, the industry is poised to achieve record-breaking revenues of over $22B for the year.”
The Nintendo DS was the best-selling console in the US for the month of June, selling 783 000 units and placing it well ahead of the Wii in second place with 666 700 units.
Atlus’ Persona 4 for the PS2 debuted at the top of the Japanese software chart with an impressive 193 000 copies. Wonder if Persona 4 will do as well when it is released across North America in December.

Biohazard Zero is a port of the 2002 GameCube version, the fifth game in the popular series known as Resident Evil in the West. To date Capcom US has declined offers to bring the game to the West after gamers reacted adversely to Capcom of Japan’s announcement that they would be porting the GameCube version to the Wii.

With life-to-date sales now at 2.261 million, the battle between this title and Wii Fit seems to be over.
Stay tuned for the hardware data which will be released tomorrow. While the PSP is likely to hang on to its lead as the best-selling console in Japan, it will be interesting to see if the Nintendo DS can retain its marginal lead on the Wii for a second week.
If you missed it you should head over to last week’s software chart or brush up on previous hardware sales.
