With Grand Theft Auto V still drifting in release date limbo, the next open-world title on the horizon is Sleeping Dogs. The game is set in Hong Kong and sees you assume the role of Detective Wei Shen as he attempts to infiltrate one of the region’s most notorious Triad organisations - ‘Sun On Yee’.
I’ve seen plenty of action-packed trailers in my time but I don’t remember witnessing real-time footage of a game’s protagonist leaping from his bike onto the roof of a car so he can hijack the unsuspecting driver. Well, now I have!
Few games have used Hong Kong as a setting despite its rich history, varied terrain and impressive skyline. Sleeping Dogs’ developer United Front Games is looking to capture the essence of the territory’s cultural and architectural diversity through a gripping story and open-world playground packed to the brim with authentic details.
Hong Kong is the seedy and morally ambiguous venue for Sleeping Dogs - the latest open-world action game published by Square Enix. Personally I’m a huge fan of games set in exotic locales and starring foreign protagonists so I’m intrigued to see how the game’s story element is handled.
It was almost two weeks ago that Square Enix and United Front Games revealed the publisher/developer pair’s collaboration in the form of Sleeping Dogs, a brand new open-world action game that we may have heard of before under the guise of Activision’s True Crime: Hong Kong.
Long (sob) story short, Activision cut development on that game, United Front got to continue work on it without the intellectual property and Square Enix picked up the project and re-branded it under the decidedly excellent moniker ‘Sleeping Dogs.’
Up to speed?
Square Enix has today formally announced Sleeping Dogs for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, a new open-world action game set in Hong Kong and due for a release towards the latter half of 2012.
Currently in development at United Front Games (Modnation Racers), Sleeping Dogs is described as “a gritty and visceral openworld cop drama set in the vibrant city of Hong Kong,” a depiction that is not coincidentally similar to Activision’s True Crime: Hong Kong.
