Now the president of Worldwide Studios at Sony Computer Entertainment - Shuhei Yoshida - has confirmed this much-coveted feature via a recent tweet to a fan who was seeking clarity on the issue.

The last few years have seen thousands of indie games appearing on iOS devices and mobile phones, some of which have gone on to make millions for their developers. Xbox 360 has an indie games section on Xbox LIVE marketplace but Sony’s current consoles – PlayStation 3 and PSP - have never really hosted games by ‘garage developers’ in a meaningful way.

That’s all set to change, according to comments made by president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS) Shuhei Yoshida during a recent interview with Develop.

Shuhei YoshidaIn an interview with Develop magazine, head of Sony Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida has revealed that the company is currently working on “concepting new hardware” as well as “future platform related activities.”

Only now for the first time, and since the departure of Ken Kutaragi (the ‘father of the PlayStation’) from Sony Computer Entertainment, Sony is working with its impressive array of first-party developers to help design and craft any new videogame hardware that Sony creates, including the next PlayStation, in order to ensure that they, the developers, are given the tools necessary to create the games of the future.

Shuhei YoshidaSCEI has appointed Shuhei Yoshida as President of SCE Worldwide Studios, effective from today. Yoshida replaces Phil Harrison who left Sony in February to become president of Infrogames.

Yoshida joined SCEI in 1993, moving to SCEA in 2000 to become Vice President of Product Development. He was promoted to Senior Vice President, US Studios, SCE Worldwide Studios in February 2007.

“SCE WWS has been developing global hit titles, sharing resources and know-how within SCE Group since its foundation, and we will reinforce our software business by further enhancing coordination among the studios under a new leader,” said Kazuo Hirai, President and Group CEO, SCEI.

“Under the leadership of Yoshida, who has proven track record in managing creative talent, SCE WWS will accelerate the software development for the PLAYSTATION 3 and PSP platforms and vigorously expand the gaming market.”
