Hybrid Art Small 5th Cell may be better known for making cutesy family friendly titles like Scribblenauts and Drawn to Life, but the developer’s next game is anything but cute, as Hybrid is emerging to be quite a dark, gritty third-person shooter indeed.

We’ll need to wait until the end of February/beginning of March for 5th Cell’s full reveal on Hybrid during Game Developers Conference 2011, but a handful of screenshots and new details have been released to whet our appetites for the developer’s first Xbox LIVE Arcade title.

Have you heard about 5th Cell’s new game, a third-person action shooter called Hybrid?

In a bit of a departure from the developer’s previous games such as Scribblenauts, Super Scribblenauts, Drawn to Life, and other light-hearted titles, 5th Cell’s Hybrid is a “pioneering third person shooter” for Xbox LIVE Arcade set in a “devastated post apocalyptic world,” and promises to deliver “a completely new gameplay experience never seen before in the genre.”

Super Scribblenauts Image Warner Bros. Interactive has officially slapped a name on the previously announced follow-up to 2009’s magical DS platform puzzle game, Scribblenauts.

Instead of going with a straight number iteration (i.e. Scribblenauts 2), Warner and developer 5th Cell have decided to call the next game in the series Super Scribblenauts, and thanks to some exciting additions to this new game, the development pair are promising “limitless creative possibilities.”

Scribblenauts BoxartScribblenauts, the wonderfully creative DS game that Warner Bros unleashed on the unsuspecting public last year September, has found its way into one million homes around the world.

Scribblenauts is a 2D platform game in which you’re tasked with collecting an object called a Starite in every new level. But how you get them is completely up to you as the game allows you to type in the name of almost literally any object you can think of (from wings, jetpacks and ladders, to tanks, guns, boats and animals) or combine countless objects to create original scenarios.

The amazing DS title, Scribblenauts, releases in the UK today, allowing gamers in the region to finally get their hands on the word play/platform game.

Scribblenauts' Maxwell Scribblenauts is an incredible 2D platform game in which you’re tasked with collecting an object called a Starite in every new level, but how you get them is completely up to you as the game allows you to type in the name of almost literally any object you can think of, from wings, jetpacks and ladders, to tanks, guns, boats and animals.

Say, for example, a Starite is stuck in a tree; an elementary solution would be to type in the word ‘chainsaw’ to make a chainsaw appear, then use the chainsaw to cut down the tree and collect the Starite.

You could also summon a beaver to gnaw at the wood, a bulldozer to push the tree down (or even an elephant, come to think of it…) or perhaps even a Lightsaber (known as a laser sword in the game) to cut it down manually.

Your imagination truly is the limit!

Scribblenauts Boxart Publisher of the excellent-looking Scribblenauts, Warner Bros. Interactive has unfortunately confirmed that the sandbox puzzle-solving DS game will only be out in the UK on October 9th, rather than its previously announced September 25th release date.

Scribblenauts BoxartThe release of Scribblenauts for the DS is just around the corner, the 15th of September. Here’s a batch of new screenshots, a new trailer and an interview with the game’s creative director to keep you entertained until then.

Write anything, Solve everything

The objective of this puzzle action game is to help Maxwell complete puzzles and collect the Starite in each level. Players do this by writing an objects name on the touchscreen, with each object behaving as it would in the real world and players able to combine countless objects to create new scenarios.

Scribblenauts, which also managed to pick up a few awards for its impressive presence at E3 this year, allows players to type in basically any word they can think of, and it will magically appear in the game, ready to realistically interact with the world and help you solve puzzles along the way.

Game Critics Awards Best of E3 Logo

The winners of the Game Critics Awards: Best of E3 2009 have been announced, with Uncharted 2 making a clean sweep with three awards, and the wonderful DS game, Scribblenauts, winning two awards.

Notably, Brütal Legend, which was nominated for four awards, came away with nothing, which is a shame.

The publishers also won big, as Microsoft and Sony both won three awards, while Activision and Warner Bros. both came away with two awards apiece.

For the full list of winners, as well as a nice breakdown of awards by platform, head on down below:

One game that somehow slipped through the cracks during the insane week of E3 was a little DS game called Scribblenauts.

The premise of Scribblenauts is very simple – you are trying to find objects in the world called ‘Starites,’ which can either be hidden or in full view, depending on the mode you’re in (puzzle or action).

You can collect these Starites by interacting with the world in a very unique way, which is by typing words – any words – onto the virtual keyboard that describe what you think will help you achieve your goal.

The example in the developer video below is of a Starite stuck in a tree, which means you need to find a way of getting it down. The developer types in the word ‘chainsaw’ at which time a chainsaw appears in the game, ready and able to cut down the tree, thus reaching the Starite.

You can also type in the word ‘beaver,’ and a beaver will appear to gnaw at the tree so it will fall down, or you could try typing in the word ‘ball,’ at which time a ball would appear for you to try and knock the Starite out of the tree. The word ‘ladder’ would also work, inserting a ladder into the game so your in-game avatar can climb up the tree to collect the Starite.
