THQ and developer Volition have revealed the next add-on content for the pair’s zany open-world action game, Saints Row: The Third, but it won’t follow the traditional mould set by content previously released for the title, which has now shipped 11 million units worldwide.

For one thing, it’s going to be a stand-alone expansion and will released at retail, although a downloadable version is to be expected. Also, it adds what Volition says is the most fan-requested feature the team has received regarding Saints Row: The Third - superpowers.

Well, you’re going to be disappointed because THQ has revealed that the next DLC pack for Volition’s insane open-world action game will see players jetting off into the far-flung recesses of space for some adventures with ‘Gangstas in Space.’

If you have to sum up Saints Row: The Third in one word it has to be ‘crazy.’ With the amount of weird and wonderful activities and characters it was hard to imagine that it could get any weirder. The weirdest of them all was the cat-like Professor Genki, and when you hear that the new downloadable content is called Genkibowl VII you know things are about to get pushed up a notch or two.

Following the announcement that Volition’s Saints Row: The Third had shipped (Note: Not sold) an impressive 3.8 million units since its release in November, with an additional five to six million expected over the title’s lifetime, THQ revealed that the publisher intends to exit the once-lucrative kid’s games market in order to become “a more streamlined organization focused only on our strongest franchises.”

Focus, too, will be given to THQ’s digital distribution efforts as a result of the success of Saints Row: The Third’s downloadable content offerings.

Since these announcements were made, however, the situation has turned very dire for THQ.

Saints Row: The Third is an excellent open-world action adventure game in its own right allowing you the freedom to do just about any zany thing you can imagine, including trawling the streets in a tank, calling down airstrikes onto your enemies and zooming along in cyberspace.

What makes the game even more special is the chance to heavily customise yourself, not only right from the beginning, but as your progress, too, allowing you to create a completely unique, ‘special’ character heretofore unseen by human eyes.

The mischievous Professor Genki is at it again, this time extending his fun-filled (or ‘fun-filled’) game show out into the streets of Steelport with larger-than-life tests of character, determination and physical ‘integrity’ - there are some hungry sharks lurking about.

In case you needed your in-game Saints Row: The Third persona to look any more ridiculous (or awesome, as the case may be), a brand new set of downloadable content recently became available for Volition’s open-world action game, bringing with it new clothing options.

And by ‘clothing’ we actually mean ‘armour.’ And by ‘armour’ we also mean ‘space suit.’ And by ‘space suit’ we actually mean ‘poor excuse for a space suit.’

Saints Row: The Third Box Art Smaller - PS3 With the recent release of Saints Row: The Third from THQ and Volition on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC, the world received one of the most outrageous, over-the-top and wildly enjoyable open-world games ever released, which presents insane scenario after crazy set-piece after twisted plot point.

Do you think you’re up to making a decision that may or may not be of the ‘tough’ variety? Then make your way to El33tonline’s Saints Row: The Third Competition page… and choose!

In the perfect world there will be enough room for two games of a similar genre to co-exist. In this theoretical world we will be able to have Saints Row and Grand Theft Auto live harmoniously side by side. But we do not live in that world, so in order for both games to be a success they need to up their game.

Rockstar clearly sees Saints Row as a threat, and as such released the Grand Theft Auto V announcement trailer right before Saints Row: The Third launched. This was followed by the THQ boss saying the two games can actually co-exist. From what I have seen this is indeed the case, as Volition has seriously upped their game with Saints Row: The Third. This game is epic!

El33tonline Question of the Day

Videogames give us the chance to perform all kinds of incredible feats, from fighting in a futuristic war against hideous aliens, to taking part in your own action movie, to going on grand adventures through lands of fantasy. Videogames also allow us to jump into the seat of Formula One racing cars, creep over vast terrain as a soldier and pilot fighter jets.

Games offer us the ability to master a realistic set of rules for extended reward, or simply jump into fantastic make-believe scenarios for a few minutes (or hours) of fun.

So this Question of the Day asks:

Do you prefer games boasting realism, or games with an element of the fantastic?

So, the debut Grand Theft Auto V trailer was released an hour ago showcasing Rockstar Games’ latest vision for the series, taking place in the fan-favourite location of San Andreas (modelled on real world Californian cities such as Los Angeles) with very believable and realistic action.

But… what if realism isn’t your style? What’s the polar opposite of Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V?
