EL33TONLINE: News tag archive: rockband3

Of course we all know that playing videogames with a couple of friends is the best way to spend a Saturday night, and over the years we have swatted, strummed and sang into the wee hours of many a Sunday morning.

So I’ve made this list of my Top 10 Party Games (in no particular order) to help you plan your next big shin-dig, and perhaps even bring something new to your gaming shelf.

One of the year’s final content updates for the US PlayStation Store recently went live, bringing with it so many new pieces of downloadable data that it would make you crazy just to think about them.

Luckily for you, I’m already fantastically insane, so I’ve gone and thought about them for you - never say El33tonline doesn’t take care of you.

PlayStation Network LogoThis week on the US PlayStation Store, we’ve got loads of special offers for PlayStation Plus subscribers (including an entry to the DC Universe Online beta), two special price updates on great games, and the full version of Prototype.

Over the last few weeks, El33tonline has been running no less than five, I-said-five competitions to give you a chance of winning some of the latest and greatest videogames to grace the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3!

El33tonline LogoThe thing is, the dreaded ‘Closing Date’ for these competitions is drawing near… very near! If you close your eyes and concentrate, you may even feel the disturbingly hot breath of the ‘Closing Date’ on the back of your neck!

It’s that close!

But there’s still something you can do to ward off this dangerous creature: Enter El33tonline’s range of competitions and you’ll never have to worry about the beast again! Well, until our next round of competitions, that is…

Here’s a quick round-up of El33tonline’s currently on-the-go competitions, all of which close on December 5th:

What are you waiting for, an invitation?!

Oh… OK then, here you are: You are cordially invited to enter El33tonline’s competitions!

So here’s a question for you: Have you entered El33tonline’s massive range of competitions currently on-the-go?

If you haven’t, you’ve still got until December 5th to do so, but as an ancient Chinese proverb says: “If one hesitates to enter El33tonline’s awesome competitions, one shall be doomed to mid-night panic attacks. If one enters El33tonline’s awesome competitions early, one shall be at peace.”

El33tonline LogoSuch wise words!

If you’re in a competition entering mood, be sure to look over our competition page and submit your entries to stand a chance of winning Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, The Sims 3 on console, EA Sports MMA, Rock Band 3 and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit!

Also, the next three days are your final chances to rack up as many points as possible on your Xbox 360 Gamerscore, so you can stand a chance of winning one of three fantastic prizes in El33tonline’s ‘Ultimate Achievement Grinder’ competition!

If you think it’s already done and dusted, think again! It isn’t over until it’s over (at 5pm in South Africa on the 28th of November), so ‘Just Go For It,’ Henshin a-go-go style!

If your concern is that the plastic music instrument genre might be dying, you can at least be satisfied that it lasted until Rock Band 3 came out. If no more of these games ever come out it won’t matter because there just isn’t anything more to add. Of course I hope that tracks keep getting released onto the store because there can never be enough music for the platform, but in terms of features Harmonix have gone so far beyond any other simulation music game that I can’t see how they can outdo themselves again (apart from adding trumpets or saxophones, but there has most certainly been reached a point of diminishing returns).

It’s been confirmed that Viacom Inc. (parent company of MTV Networks and Comedy Central) has decided to sell Rock Band and Dance Central developer Harmonix, following several quarters of unprofitability for the media giant.

Viacom is reportedly in talks with several potential buyers for Harmonix, after acquiring the developer for $175 million at the end of 2006, and has classified the studio as ‘a discontinued operation.’

Harmonix has announced that all downloadable content (DLC) released for Rock Band after October 26th will be specific to Rock Band 3, and incompatible with previous entries to the series, the original Rock Band and Rock Band 2.

All tracks released before that date, however, will remain compatible with those titles, while new Rock Band Network songs will be playable across all versions of the franchise.

Why?

Music Game InstrumentsIt’s no secret that the music game genre is a little… crowded these days, as Activision Blizzard continues to release at least one Guitar Hero game every year, which is now accompanied by what will be annual entries into the DJ Hero franchise. Harmonix, too, has its Rock Band franchise spilling out all over the place, with no less than five series entries to date, with a sixth releasing this past week.

With all of this choice and a resultant market deluge, sales of titles in the music game genre have been on the decline for a while, with a string of less than stellar Guitar Hero games, worse than expected retail performance by The Beatles: Rock Band (and the invisible releases of Green Day: Rock Band and LEGO Rock Band), as well as underwhelming initial sales numbers for the original DJ Hero.

John Lennon's Imagine Album CoverHarmonix recently announced that the ‘Imagine’ album from the legendary John Lennon will become available for Rock Band 3 following the game’s release this week, and will be amongst the first albums released for the title as downloadable content.

‘Imagine’ will form part of an amazing roster of upcoming downloadable albums for Rock Band 3, as songs from The Doors, Bon Jovi and Billy Joel will make an appearance on the Rock Band Music Store in the coming weeks.

In a pretty hilarious, very tongue-in-cheek video posted by fellows from Harmonix, the full list of tracks to be included in this year’s Rock Band 3 has been revealed, as the developers remind gamers to only trust ‘reliable’ sources of information (such as Harmonix proper), rather than get information from ‘terrible’ news sites that decide to leak information early.

You can watch that video below, as well as catch the impressive full list of Rock Band 3 tracks:
