Unfortunately there’s not much to get excited about on this week’s Media Create software chart. There’re only two new entries in the top ten and none of the games on this list sold particularly well.
Rhythm Heaven regains pole position with 48 190 copies sold during the last week while the new Monster Hunter Diary game for PSP continues to do well with 40 997 units sold during the latest accounting period.
The two new entries on this week’s chart are Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2 on PS3 and Growlanser IV: Over Reloaded on PSP. Both of them are RPGs with distinctive anime visuals and what appears to be turn-based combat mechanics.
It’s not everyday that a game sells more than 100 000 units during a single week in Japan but Rhythm Heaven managed to do just that during the last week according to Media Create’s software chart.
This is the first time the series has come to Wii, as the previous two entries were on Game Boy Advance and DS respectively. From the looks of things, Rhythm Heaven is a compilation of musical mini-games based around your adeptness at tapping buttons in time to the beat.
Even in this day and age of internet scoops, Nintendo managed to surprise us with a few announcements at the publisher’s E3 press conference this year.
At the top of the list was the Wii U, Nintendo’s next home console and the successor to the Wii. The tablet-like controller for the Wii U has a touchscreen, dual analogue circle pads, motion controls, speakers, a microphone and a camera. The controller screen can be used instead of or along with HDTV.
If you enjoy rhythm games (and a challenge) then Rhythm Heaven will be right up your alley.
The game will teach you rhythm and test your skill with fun music challenges. You’ll need to “feel the rhythm and complete musical patterns on the fly” through various visual and audio cues.
Well here’s something you don’t see everyday – a game that requires you to tap to the rhythm of the actions and animations on-screen, with scenarios including a man slapping eggs into his mouth, dancing frogs, and ghosts playing guitars and drums. Anything goes in the zany world of Rhythm Heaven!
Watch the launch trailer below to see what other crazy things you’ll be seeing when you get your hands on Rhythm Heaven on the DS:
Nintendo’s Rhythm Tengoku Gold spent another week on top of the Japanese software chart for the week ending the 7th of September. In a relatively low-selling week, the DS title topped the chart with 55 000 copies sold according to Media Create. Its total of 668 000 copies sold is already more than double the original title on the Game Boy Advance and it looks set to reach the coveted 1 million.
Wii Fit somehow climbs back in to second place over 9 months since it was first released, selling 32 000 copies in the week, up from fifth last week with a very slight increase in sales. Blue Dragon Plus for the DS managed to enter the charts this week in third place with 21 000 copies sold, which is significantly less than the original Xbox 360 game achieved when it was released.
Sony’s latest PS3 release, Afrika managed to stay in the top five with 19 000 copies sold this week for a total of 57 000 copies so far. The PS2 also boasted a top five title again in J-League Winning Eleven 2008 Club Championship which sold 18 000 copies.
Rhythm Heaven, coming to DS, seems kind of strange at first, but it all ends up looking genius when you realise you’re actually relying on the music and actions being shown on screen, as opposed to just the actions in other, let’s say, guitar-based rhythm games.
The press release says it best: “Rhythm Heaven is a simple and infectious rhythm game that anyone can play. If you can tap your finger in time to music, you’ll get the hang of Rhythm Heaven in no time!”
