It seems that the Capcom army have been very busy despite Resident Evil 5 being all but wrapped up, hitting shelves across the US and Europe tomorrow.
First the publisher announced a new online mode for RE5 called Versus and then it revealed Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles for the Wii, a sequel to The Umbrella Chronicles. But it seems that more Resident Evil goodness is to follow with the recent announcement of the Resident Evil Classics Line.
The first two titles to be released in the new Resident Evil Classics line will be the popular Nintendo GameCube classics Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil, exclusively to the Wii. The remakes have been “refitted to support the Wii Remote, giving the Wii audience easy access to the rich characters and in-depth storylines of the series and the chance to experience both games on a new platform.”
You may remember that early last year Capcom said that Resident Evil Zero would only be coming to Japanese Wiis. We are grateful that the publisher has changed its mind.
The games will be priced at $29.99 each when they launch this year.
A discussion on Capcom’s forums has revealed that Capcom US has been asked twice if they wanted to bring Resident Evil Zero to the West and they have declined twice.
Resident Evil Zero (known as Biohazard 0 in Japan) was released on the GameCube in 2002 and follows the story of Rebecca Chambers a day before the Mansion incident. The game will be ported to the Wii and arrive in Japan next month.
Christian Svensson, Capcom’s Corporate Officer and Vice President of Strategic Planning and Business Development, was drawn into the discussion about possible boxart for Resident Evil Zero. He claims he lost track of the project after it was decided internally not to bring it to the West. He commented “Nothing is ever final, but we’ve been asked twice if we’ve wanted to bring it Westward and twice we’ve declined.”
Svensson refused to be drawn into a debate about whether he thought the port was up to scratch. “You’re reading too much into it. I know it’s a quality port. As you guys know, our guys do quality work.”
Svensson also confirmed that Capcom is not manufacturing any more Resident Evil Zero GameCube. In response to a question about whether Resident Evil Zero GC is out of print, he replied “There’s thousands of used copies on Ebay and at Gamestop and given the outcry against the project when Japan announced it on these boards and others, it’s pretty obvious that it’s not wanted by gamers here.”
