On March 6th 2010 (also known as ‘last week Saturday’), a group of like-minded individuals, professional and enthusiast software developers alike, all passionately interested in disciplines related to the development of computer and videogames, gathered at an undisclosed location (CTI’s campus in Durban North… 59 Adelaide Tambo Drive) to discuss their common interests in this exciting field.

Durban DevLAN Periphery 1Little did we (I) know that everyone would soon have their faces glued to their monitors and their hands stuck to their computer peripherals (some nice imagery there) in an effort to create a mini-game masterpiece in under eight hours.

At the beginning of the day, this garbage bin was empty. By the end of the day, it would be overflowing with discarded junk food wrappers and condiments - a diet of saturated fats and caffeine was our fuel.

The clock was ticking and there were games to be made.

Convention organiser IDG World Expo has confirmed that the E for All consumer show is to be cancelled and will not recur in 2009.

E for All LogoAfter only two events at the Los Angeles Convention Centre, the E for All event will be scrapped, following the decision by IDG World Expo to focus on a reinvigorated, further reaching and, basically, bigger E3 next year in June. A comment from IDG:

“We want to thank all of our E for All partners for their support, and we encourage E for All exhibitors to participate in the E3 new event, which we believe will meet their needs as well as those of the industry at large.”

The E for All consumer show was thought of as a supplement to E3, which took place months before in the calendar year, providing an opportunity for the public to get hands-on time with new games as well as be exposed to new, up-and-coming games and technologies. R.I.P.

Somehow the E for All Event, a public game exhibition, flew under the radar of most publications this past weekend, operating very much on the down-low. Despite such a low-key function, the expo was able to attract 15 000 attendees over the weekend, which Chief Executive Officer of IDG World Expo, Mary Dolaher, calls “a true success.” Dolaher said:

E for All Logo“E for All 2008 was all about connecting great game companies with gamers and gamers with great games, and we’re happy to report that the event was a true success in this regard. In addition to welcoming back great exhibitors, celebrity gamers and partners from last year, we added a number of new programs and special features for 2008 which truly added to the excitement and energy of the show. We want to thank everyone who participated in E for All 2008 and helped make it such a success.”

The second event of its kind in as many years, held in Los Angeles, E for All is heralded as the public E3. It also just happened to coincide with South Africa’s very own game and technology event over the weekend, rAge.
