With the PS Vita’s US and European launch less than a month away, there’s never been a better time to get acquainted with what the system is capable of.
Episode 4 of Inside PS Vita (embedded below) takes a look at some of the innovative connectivity features you’ll be able to take advantage of once the handheld is out in the wild. One such feature is Cross Play, which serves to unite the online communities of supported PS3 and PSV titles such as WipEout and Hustle Kings.
If you followed the launch of PS Vita in Japan yesterday then you may have seen some of the videos which excited buyers quickly posted to YouTube.
A few of these videos answered some lingering questions about certain PS Vita functionality such as Remote Play. This feature allows you to access your PS3 system remotely using a PS Vita, either through a private network or the internet.
We always knew that there’d be tons of new PlayStation Vita details revealed at the Tokyo Game Show, but what we’ve seen and heard over the last couple of days is even more exciting than I initially imagined.
One of the biggest features announced for PS Vita so far has to be its ability to play PS3 titles via Remote Play. The PSP has a similar feature which allows you to remotely browse your PS3’s XMB, listen to music and watch movies on its hard drive, or play PSone Classics. A couple of PS3 games such as Lair can even be played remotely on PSP.
Sony has announced that PSP firmware update 3.95 will be available shortly.
The update was detailed on SCEA’s PlayStation blog. It will allow players to customize how the buttons are assigned while playing PSone games on the PSP, simply go to ‘Controller Settings,’ then ‘Assign Buttons’ and select ‘Custom.’
In addition players will now be able to quit Remote Play and choose to turn the PS3 off or leave it on after quitting. This means that if players are performing a download they can quit Remote Play but the download will still continue on the PS3. When you press the Home button on the PSP there will be two options in the ‘Quit Remote Play’ screen, either ‘Quit and turn off the PS3 system’ or ‘Quit without turning off the PS3 system.’
More updates to follow once the firmware release date has been announced.
