Red Steel 2 was released exclusively for the Wii in May this year. The game received favourable reviews, earning an overall Metacritic score of 80%, but ran into serious problems when it came down to sales, only selling 270 000 copies.
We attended a very entertaining talk given by Jason VandenBerghe, Creative Director for Red Steel 2, at GDC Europe 2010 yesterday. The discussion, titled ‘Chilling tales from Red Steel 2: How Motion Control will or won’t change the future,’ took the audience on a journey through the problems the development team faced when incorporating Motion Control into the game and ended with VandenBerghe’s predictions for the future of Motion Control.
Ubisoft has released its full fiscal year financial results for the 12 months ending March 31st, reporting a 17.7 percent drop in sales compared to last year, down to $1.08 billion (€871 million), with an additional drop in profits, down by 5 percent to $54.02 million (€43.7 million) compared to the year previous.
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot blamed “[the] global economic crisis” for poorer than expected performance, which he reckons had “a pronounced impact on the video game industry in 2009, which contracted by nearly 10 percent year-on-year.”
Ubisoft has released a new ‘Making Of’ video for Red Steel 2, giving us a glimpse of how larger than life villain, Okaji, was brought to life.
Watch below to see a behind the scenes look at how Okaji’s fighting style, voice and look were designed, from first sketches and inspiration to in-game integration.
Red Steel 2 launched around the world last week, giving Wii owners a good opportunity to see what the WiiMote’s MotionPlus add-on is capable of with the game’s special brand of sword-swinging action and East-meets-West visual flair.
If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to sneak a peek at Red Steel 2, the launch trailer below is a good opportunity to do so as it sets up the back-story to the game very nicely, while showing off the stylised Western art style and slick gameplay all in one go:
Just Cause 2 has entered Chart Track’s UK Software Chart this week at No. 1, ahead of double debutant Pokemon SoulSilver at No. 2 and Pokemon HeartGold at No. 4, resulting in one of the biggest shake-ups the chart has seen this year.
This No. 1 position for Just Cause 2 makes up for the original title’s inability to clinch the top spot when it debuted at No. 2 almost four years ago. Square Enix seems to be on a bit of a roll this year, now with its second No. 1 published game in the UK after Final Fantasy XIII achieved the same feat a few weeks ago.
With the release of Red Steel 2 creeping up on us (23rd of March for the US and 26th of March for Europe), Ubisoft has decided to introduce us to a few new characters that we can expect to meet in the Caldera desert.
Have you ever had one of those days? Well stop feeling sorry for yourself because it’s not quite as bad a day as this cowboy is having.
Who’s this cowboy you ask and why is he having a bad day? Well he’s Swordsman from Red Steel 2 of course and you would also be having a bad day if someone just slaughtered your clan, leaving you in the Caldera desert to avenge their deaths.
Following Ubisoft’s major announcement yesterday which turned out to be that Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is currently in development for a ‘Holiday’ release, the publisher posted its fiscal third quarter earnings report ending December 31st 2009, which saw a significant decline in sales for the company.
Ubisoft is flooding us with new information about Red Steel 2, not that we’re complaining mind.
Not only did the publisher reveal that the first person sword and gunplay action title will be available across the US on the 23rd of May and a few days later on the 26th of May in Europe, but it also announced the plethora of pre-order goodies that would be made available. We also got a new trailer for the game and an interview with the Creative Director to boot.
Ubisoft has released an interview with Jason Vandenberghe, Creative Director of Red Steel 2. The short interview gives us a little more insight into the world of Caldera.
Earlier the publisher announced that the upcoming first person sword and gunplay action title, will be available across the US on the 23rd of May, and a few days later on the 26th of May in Europe. It also outlined the pre-order goodies that would be available for the title.
Read below to find out more what places you can expect to explore in the game as well as details about the weather and inhabitants of the city. Thanks to Ubisoft for the interview.
Ubisoft has announced that its upcoming first person sword and gunplay action title, Red Steel 2, will be available across the US on the 23rd of May with Europe following on the 26th of May, confirming an earlier report of a release date spotted on the publisher’s official website.
The publisher also revealed the pre-order edition of the game, although it remains unclear whether this will be available outside of the US (the trailer below indicates that it will be available at GameStop). However, confusion aside, the pre-order pack is looking pretty sweet. It includes a Red Steel 2 art book, Red Steel 2 branded metal bullet as well as four exclusive in-game weapons.
Nintendo of Europe has unveiled a list of its upcoming hardware and software release dates for the next few months, highlights of which include the DSi XL, Red Steel 2, Endless Ocean 2, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver, Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth, and Jonas Brothers.

According to the publisher’s official website, Ubisoft’s Red Steel 2 has been handed its official release date, and will be swinging and slicing its way into North American households on March 23rd on the Wii.
It will be incredibly interesting to see the sales performance of Red Steel 2 on the Wii, after a host of big name publishers, include SEGA, Capcom and EA, have found it almost impossible to attract any kind of audience for mature titles on Nintendo’s Wii.
We quite enjoyed our time with Red Steel 2 during rAge 2009, however, so we’re definitely holding thumbs for this first-person sword- and gunplay action title.
After taking a bit of a gamble on publishing mature titles such as The Conduit and MadWorld on the Wii, and seeing poor sales of those titles as a result of the seemingly impenetrable and unpredictable market surrounding the console, SEGA has decided not to pursue the development of any further non family-friendly titles for the Wii.
According to SEGA of America’s studio director, Constantine Hantzopoulos, and once again speaking to the guys of the ‘4 Guys 1Up’ podcast, the publisher will “probably not” develop or publish any more mature Wii titles. Hantzopoulos said:
The first thing that strikes you about Ubisoft’s upcoming Wii first person shooting and sword sequel, Red Steel II, is the art style. Not only has it changed dramatically from the first Red Steel, but it’s so unique that it successfully manages to set itself apart from any other game as well.
After spending some time with the demo of the game I can safely say that it is action-packed from the get-go, with the opening cut scene showing the main character being dragged ruthlessly, hands-bound, behind a motorbike. The environments are slickly presented with the Western theme being carried through down to every last detail of the stages.
