Red Faction: Armageddon Box Art (Small) During a recent investor report in which THQ revealed disappointing company-wide first quarter performance, CEO Brian Farrell announced that the publisher will not “carry forward” with the Red Faction franchise (at least in any meaningful way) in the future due to “disappointing performance.”

Farrell explained that, in today’s “hit-driven, core gaming business,” even reasonably popular and highly polished games such as Red Faction will have a tough time in terms of sales performance, as these titles “face a bar that continues to move higher and higher.”

This latest update for the US PlayStation Store is what one would term a ‘Mega Content Edition,’ hence the header.

PlayStation Network LogoIt’s stuffed to the gills with great new downloadable content, including the full versions of Red Faction: Guerrilla and Scott Pilgrim VS the World, the demo for Mafia II, a PSP demo for Valkyria Chronicles 2 and a new adventure for Dragon Age: Origins.

Also included today are a bunch of interesting videos, new themes and wallpapers, new Qore video offers, PlayStation Plus content, and the usual assortment of Rock Band and Guitar Hero tracks.

It’s been announced on the US PlayStation Blog that subscribers in the region who’ve signed up with the PlayStation Network service, PlayStation Plus, can expect new, free content and special price offers to arrive every second week from now on, with the first of these content updates appearing on August 10th.

As part of the publisher’s planned ‘transmedia’ approach to the releases of its future blockbuster videogames, THQ (in collaboration with SyFy) has announced that a two-hour live-action movie pilot set in the Red Faction universe is scheduled to air in March 2011.

Entitled ‘Red Faction: Origins’ (working title), the movie is set between the events of the previously released Red Faction: Guerrilla, and next year’s Red Faction: Armageddon, which is also set for release in March next year.

The screenplay for Red Faction: Origins was written by writer and producer Andrew Kreisberg (Warehouse 13, Fringe, Vampire Diaries and Boston Legal), and was based on a story developed by THQ’s director of fiction development, Paul DeMeo (The Rocketeer, Flash, Viper, The Sentinel).

Following the release of a creepy E3 2010 trailer, THQ has formally announced and detailed Red Faction: Armageddon, the second third-person action shooter set in the Geo-Mod 2.0 enabled (destroy basically anything) leg of the franchise.

With a planned release of March 2011 on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, Red Faction: Armageddon is currently in development at original studio Volition, and this time focuses on a fight for survival beneath the surface of Mars, as opposed to Red Faction: Guerrilla’s top-side battles and skirmishes.

A debut trailer for Red Faction Armageddon has recently been released, and by the looks of things this game is going to be a very different outing compared to the previous entry to the Red Faction franchise, Guerrilla.

While the signature environment destruction will most certainly still be intact in Armageddon, the outdoor adventures from Guerrilla seem to be minimised in favour of a more underground and creepy affair, as humanity discovers that Mars is inhabited by ‘beings’ other than the humans who have colonised the planet for the purposes of mining…

According to THQ’s VP of Core Games, Danny Bilson, the follow-up to 2009’s excellent Red Faction: Guerrilla will release in March of 2011, and will represent a “hybrid” between that new entry to the Red Faction franchise, and the older series entries, Red Faction 1 and 2.

Darksiders Xbox 360 Box Art Small If you bought an early US copy of the action adventure game Darksiders, then you may just have a little treat waiting inside the box.

You see, publishers of Darksiders THQ put a little redemption coupon inside Xbox 360 and PS3 copies of the game that was marked with the words “Do Not Discard,” and owners were instructed to visit the Darksiders website to wait and see what the coupon was for.

A month later, we get to see what it does.

THQ has announced that the third DLC pack for Red Faction Guerrilla, the Smasher Pack, will be available on the 1st of October for the PS3 and Xbox 360. It will be priced at $4.99 on the PlayStation Network and 400 Microsoft Points on Xbox Live.

The Smasher Pack will include 8 new maps for the multiplayer mode Wrecking Crew as well as a new Behemoth mode. Players will be able to switch out the usual weapons for the three single player campaign Walkers in the Behemoth mode.

Hot on the heels of last week’s launch of the Demons of the Badland downloadable content for Red Faction Guerrilla, THQ has announced the details for a second DLC pack.

The new Multiplayer pack will include two new modes, Bagman and Team Bagman, as well as eight new maps which will be playable across all multiplayer modes. The new DLC will be available on the 17th of September for the Xbox 360 and PS3. It will cost 560 Microsoft Points on Xbox Live and $6.99 on the PlayStation Network.

Demons of the Badlands, the new game add on for Red Faction Guerrilla is now available on Xbox Live for 800 Microsoft Points.

Demons of the Badlands is a new single player game in a prequel chapter of the Red Faction universe that features new environments, vehicles and weapons and promises to deliver more mayhem.

THQ LogoPublisher THQ recently reported record financial results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2010 ended June 30th, thanks largely to impressive sales of UFC 2009: Undisputed and Red Faction: Guerrilla.

Net sales were up 77 percent to $243.5 million, with profits at $6.4 million, as opposed to a $27.2 million loss during the same period last year. It was also revealed during the report that UFC 2009: Undisputed has shipped 2.9 million copies, while Red Faction: Guerrilla has shipped over 1 million copies.
