One of the most anticipated blockbuster games of the year released this week around the world from Rocksteady Studios, the creator’s of 2009’s incredible Batman: Arkham Asylum, and in Batman: Arkham City, players will explore an amazingly detailed open-world while once again matching wits and resolve with The Batman’s arch-nemesis, The Joker.
A new villain, Hugo Strange, has also arrived on the scene as the steward of ‘Arkham City,’ a prison district sectioned off from Gotham that currently houses some of the most vile and dastardly ne’er-do-wells ever seen.
Naturally, there are foul goings-on in the massive metropolis and as T. Batman, players will be tasked with getting to the bottom of the trouble while meeting a huge cast of fan-favourite characters, all while gliding around the city and beating up a mountain of goons.
From what we’ve seen of Batman: Arkham City so far, its place on many a ‘Game of the Year’ list (and even ‘favourite game of all time’ lists) is assured, so Lisa and I jumped at the opportunity to speak with lead narrative designer at Rocksteady, Paul Crocker, about his work on the title, the challenges of writing for an open-world game, the value of collaboration, and more.
The Assassin’s Creed series has exploded since the release of the first game in 2007, and as it continued to sell millions of copies over subsequent game releases through to the end of 2010 across all platforms, the franchise has outgrown its digital interactive form and spawned comic books, novels, a series of live action short story videos, an upcoming animated short film and an extensive encyclopaedia.
Ahead of the release of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and the Assassin’s Creed: Embers animated film on November 15th, we got to speak to ‘transmedia development director’ at Ubisoft, Julien Cuny, where we found out about the creation of the Assassin’s Creed Encyclopaedia as well as the quality control in place to govern Ubisoft’s ‘transmedia’ approach to the franchise, all while discovering the secrets of Ezio’s final adventure.
With the announcement of IO Interactive’s Hitman Absolution earlier this year, and subsequent teaserly trailers and reveals, the gaming world has been waiting for its first glimpse of in-game action from the studio’s next stealth-action title, and during an El33tonline-attended presentation of the game, we got this sneak peek, and more!

El33tonline came to rAge 2011. We saw rAge 2011. And we conquered rage 2011.
Maybe that last part is a fabrication, but we sure did rock the show (and our neighbouring exhibitors) with our massive game and swag giveaways throughout the event, and we had an amazing experience meeting and greeting hundreds of like-minded gamers and technology enthusiasts.
While you may have seen batches of rAge 2011 photos in our previous coverage of the event, here is a smattering of snaps looking at the El33tonline team and the friends we met and made at the show:
As El33tonline began to embark on our grand journey to exhibit at rAge this year, we asked you, our friends and readers, to submit your online nick (you know, the name you use on Xbox LIVE, PlayStation Network or online) to us so we could include your names on the wall of our stand.
Months later, the design was finalised and every nick that was submitted by you was proudly displayed in the design of Stand 28, El33tonline’s home at rAge 2011.
Below, we’ve collected together a number of photos of the stand’s design, up close and personal, so you may have a chance of spotting your name (either again or for the first time).
As expected, day two of rAge 2011 was the biggest of the three-day event and enjoyed more visitors than both the opening day on Friday and a rain-soaked Sunday.
This deluge of attendees was most evident outside of the Coca-Cola Dome in the minutes leading up to the show’s opening on Saturday, October 1st, and hundreds of gamers and curiosity seekers stuck themselves in lines leading to the entrance of the building.
“How many LANs can a LANner LAN if a LANner can LAN LANs?”
This is a great question, and at this year’s edition of the annual NAG LAN at rAge, 2196 gamers attempted to provide an answer.
The third and final day of rAge 2011 began on a dreary, chilled and rainy morning in Johannesburg, but despite the cold (and perhaps even because of it), thousands of gamers braved the elements to make their way to the Coca-Cola Dome and soak in the atmosphere of the biggest and best game and technology show in South Africa.
El33tonline was there to meet them.
Following on from a successful first day, day two of rAge 2011 dawned bright and early for El33tonline as we made our way to Coca-Cola Dome to make sure everything was prepared for the second and (by all accounts and experience) biggest day of the show.
We were expecting enormous crowds of gamers and event attendees to stream through the floor, and we certainly weren’t disappointed - Saturday was definitely the biggest day of the lot!
rAge 2011 in Johannesburg this past weekend was a fantastic time for us, not only because we got to meet dozens of our friends and readers in person and spread the word of El33tonline and Afrihost at the show, but we also had a great time as the soldiers of Battlefield 3 decided to invade our stand!
One of the games that we weren’t sure would make an appearance at rAge 2011 was Warner Bros. Interactive and Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham City, but when we were clued in that developers on the game would be at the show this year, we became very excited at the prospect of seeing it again!
So too, it seems, were the thousands of rAge attendees, and hordes of gamers made their way to Arkham City’s unique stand to go hands-on with Rocksteady’s next masterful action adventure title.
This year’s rAge videogame and technology event in Johannesburg was without a doubt the biggest and best ever, as least as far as El33tonline is concerned!
Hosting nearly 27 000 attendees this year, well over a dozen upcoming, unreleased games, and enormous and impressive stands, the ninth annual rAge expo has set the benchmark for all future events in South Africa.
El33tonline was in attendance at rAge 2011, not only as an exhibitor at Stand 28, but we also managed to snap a few photos of the showfloor to clue you into the insane sights to be found at the event.
Let’s go!
rAge 2011 in Johannesburg was packed to the absolute brim with upcoming, unreleased games from developers and publishers of all sizes, and EA was once again fully present at the show this year with an excellent collection of titles.
From September 30th through to October 2nd at rAge 2011, there was one game that dominated many a gamer’s time at the event - Battlefield 3.
I got some great four-player gaming in with Rayman Origins this weekend at rAge. The guys I played with were complete strangers and highly varied in skill levels as well as age, but it was a really fun experience. That’s because Rayman Origins is a game that is pure quality in graphics, design and style.
It’s the New Super Mario Bros Wii of this year - the best option for a four-player local-multiplayer gaming session for friends or family looking for more than just a party game. Not that I have anything against party games.
