The highlight of this year’s Game Developers Conference was arguably Quantic Dream’s ‘Kara’ tech demo which showcased the Heavy Rain developer’s new graphics engine running in real time on PS3. While the demo was very impressive from a graphical standpoint, the most significant effect of it was making us momentarily forget about its technical aspects and focus instead on the moving story of a sentient android fighting for its life.
Quantic Dream is best known for creating the PlayStation 3 graphical tour de force, Heavy Rain, a context-sensitive adventure game that explored and broke brave new ground in the way we interact with and affect stories in games.
At a presentation during GDC 2012 recently, the studio gave a sneak peek at the technology that will be running under the hood of its next game project by using an unbelievable video demonstration showcasing the company’s extreme attention to detail, as well as its pursuit of emotional resonance in videogames.
Set aside seven minutes of your time and be astounded by this real-time demo, running on PlayStation 3:
One of the best adventure games currently available on PlayStation 3 is Heavy Rain - a thrilling interactive experience by French developer Quantic Dream featuring a branching storyline and lifelike graphics.
The ‘Greatest Hits’ version of Heavy Rain will go on sale on November 8th in North America for the budget price of $29.99. This version is the ‘Director’s Cut’ of the game so plenty of additional content has been included in the box to sweeten the deal.
If you consider Heavy Rain to be one of your favourite titles, then you’ll no doubt be interested to know what Quantic Dream is going to develop next. I certainly am!
There’s no official word on what the studios’s next game will be (or even what platform it will appear on), but if you go on over to their website and click on the “Recruitment” tab you’ll get a good idea of what we can expect and how far away it is.

Do you already own Sony and Quantic Dream’s masterpiece of an adventure game, Heavy Rain? And are you intrigued by what the newly-released PlayStation Move controllers can bring to the experience?
Well, if you’ve just bought a Move Motion Controller and you want to try playing something other than mini-games for five minutes, you’ll definitely want to download the PlayStation Move patch for Heavy Rain, which will allow you to use the Motion Controller in the game.
Over E3 2010, Guillame de Fondaumière at game development studio Quantic Dream told videogame consumer site Game Informer that the PlayStation Move version of Heavy Rain is currently the company’s highest priority, as ‘encouraged’ by Sony.
This means that the planned series of Heavy Rain ‘Chronicles’ downloadable content (DLC) has been put on ‘indefinite hold’ until the Move version of the game is complete, but according to de Fondaumière, it’s more than likely that the studio will simply skip the DLC and move onto the next (non-Heavy Rain related) project.
Now, Quantic Dream head honcho David Cage has confirmed these comments, saying that he’s “disappointed for fans we could not finish the story of Heavy Rain the way we intended.”
In a bit of unfortunate news for rabid Heavy Rain fans, it seems as though developer Quantic Dream has put the planned second chapter of the series of ‘Chronicles’ downloadable content (DLC) on ‘indefinite hold,’ in favour of developing the recently announced PlayStation Move version of Heavy Rain.
The developer of Heavy Rain, Quantic Dream, is currently hard at work on not only producing the moody, story-driven adventure game, but is also trying to carve out a demo for the title, which is causing the team, and CEO of the developer David Cage, some troubles:
“We are currently working on a demo, which is a real challenge,” said Cage during an interview with G4tv. “Finding one scene that can convey what we are trying to achieve with Heavy Rain is something really difficult. If we show an action scene, some players will think that this is what Heavy Rain is all about, and it is the same thing if we show an exploration scene.”
