Greetings everybody, turns out that it’s Workers’ Day in South Africa - a public holiday in which we acknowledge the strides made by trade unions to win standard and fair employment agreements, as well as the important achievement of writing into law the recognition of a culture of human and worker rights.

Wikipedia tells us:

“In pre-1994 South Africa, the demand for the annual observance of the day as a public holiday became a rallying point for workers and their trade unions and was one of a number of annually significant days to symbolise and mobilise resistance to the Apartheid government and its racial policies.”

(Fun Fact: For our non-South African readers, Apartheid is pronounced ‘Apart-hate’ - which is fitting - instead of ‘Apart-hide’ as you may have heard in movies.)

So how do South Africans recognise Workers Day? We don’t work. We’ll still have a few pieces of news appearing on El33tonline today, but it’s going to be chilled around here until tomorrow.
