E3 2012 is a great opportunity for Sony to drive home the point that its sizeable collection of upcoming exclusives is reason enough to own a PlayStation 3 or PS Vita. With titles like The Last of Us, God of War: Ascension and LittleBigPlanet Vita on the horizon, Sony is likely to draw attention to its first-party line-up while also highlighting third-party support from companies such as Activision, who will be releasing Call of Duty Vita later this year.

The PS Vita is turning out to be a very cost-effective console for gaming (initial hardware aside) with PSP classics like God of War: Ghost of Sparta going for just R79 and some Vita titles selling for as little as R20. The latest round of discounts on the UK PlayStation Store has resulted in the prices of three first-party Vita titles being slashed to just R169/£11.99!
As we’ve come to expect, a period of scheduled PlayStation Network maintenance is due to take place on May 24th (tomorrow) in an effort to “continue to deliver you a world-class online entertainment experience on your PS3 and PS Vita devices.”
The PS Vita is slowly gaining momentum as new games are announced or given release dates on a weekly basis. The latest Vita title to be dated is Rugby Challenge - a handheld port of the console version that was released in September last year.
This week’s PlayStation Store update is chockablock with exciting new content and price promotions, from a massive ModNation Racers and thatgamecompany sale to the introduction of a number of classic SEGA titles such as Super Hang-On and The Revenge Of Shinobi.
One of the biggest issues with the PS Vita’s current firmware is its disappointing web browser. While it’s adequate for basic browsing, most online videos can’t be streamed (including YouTube) and there are no options to adjust simple settings such as universal zoom level. The browser supposedly supports HTML5 but for some reason you can’t stream HTML5 videos on YouTube.
One of the most intriguing indie games due for release this year is Retro City Rampage - an open-world action title for PSN, XBLA, Steam and WiiWare that draws inspiration from classic games such as Grand Theft Auto III, Mega Man and The Legend of Zelda. Retro City Rampage is the brainchild of Brian Provinciano and began as a homebrew project ten years ago.
The PS Vita may be a very powerful device but certain basic tasks like being able to use its web browser while a game is running in the background are not allowed on the current firmware. Thankfully there’s a way around this particular annoyance which I’m going to outline for you today.
Last Friday PS Vita fans received some unexpected news - the highly anticipated PS3 title Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time will also be released on PS Vita, on the same day as the PS3 version! The game will be released sometime during the latter part of this year and will feature cross platform save functionality between the two versions. As you would expect, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time on Vita also makes use of the system’s innovative controls by featuring such conveniences as SixAxis aiming.
It’s almost time to put on your sneaking suit, bandanna and optional eyepatch because Konami has finally announced the release date for Metal Gear Solid HD Collection Vita. Gamers in both the US and European territories will be able to get their hands on this long-awaited title from June 12th, with the game being available from retailers and as a digital download via the PlayStation Store.
The PlayStation Network has really come a long way over the past few years and now offers a larger dose of weekly digital content than ever before. With a range of categories that include PS3 Full Games, PSN titles, PSone/PS2 Classics and PSP/PS Vita games, PSN always seems to have a few glittering gems enticing you to open your wallet.
Brain training games are nothing new but upcoming Vita title Smart As attempts to take this genre to the next level by incorporating innovative competitive elements. Billed as a “social brain training experience”, you’ll be able to compare your ‘Brain Power’ with other players using a variety of leaderboard filters and swop puzzles with other gamers in your region using Near.
Silent Hill: Book of Memories may not be the most anticipated upcoming PS Vita title but it nevertheless will give Vita gamers something to play while we wait patiently for more developers to support the system with quality software.
This week’s PlayStation Store update is headlined by two long-awaited PSN releases - Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II and PixelJunk 4am. Thankfully there are trials for both games so you shouldn’t have to experience any buyer’s remorse if you play your cards right.
