The PS Vita is turning out to be a very cost-effective console for gaming (initial hardware aside) with PSP classics like God of War: Ghost of Sparta going for just R79 and some Vita titles selling for as little as R20. The latest round of discounts on the UK PlayStation Store has resulted in the prices of three first-party Vita titles being slashed to just R169/£11.99!
The PS Vita is slowly gaining momentum as new games are announced or given release dates on a weekly basis. The latest Vita title to be dated is Rugby Challenge - a handheld port of the console version that was released in September last year.
One of the biggest issues with the PS Vita’s current firmware is its disappointing web browser. While it’s adequate for basic browsing, most online videos can’t be streamed (including YouTube) and there are no options to adjust simple settings such as universal zoom level. The browser supposedly supports HTML5 but for some reason you can’t stream HTML5 videos on YouTube.
Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has posted three new videos to the Soul Sacrifice website that collectively account for 34 minutes of the presentation that was held in Tokyo last Thursday. The videos feature English interpretation of the various speakers who took to the stage during the presentation - a sure sign that Sony intends to release Soul Sacrifice outside of Japan at some point.
Sony has been very quiet about LittleBigPlanet Vita of late, so much so that I was beginning to fear that it had been cancelled. Thankfully it’s very much alive and we should be seeing a lot more of it at E3 next month. Some lucky PS Vita owners will even get a chance to participate in the game’s closed beta “very soon.”
The PS Vita isn’t always the most user-friendly device and can be confusing to get to grips with if you’re accustomed to using consoles like the PS3 and Xbox 360. Sony really did everything in its power to prevent piracy on the Vita (an issue which severely impacted on the PSP’s fortunes) and this is very evident in the way that certain interface elements on the Vita come across as counter-intuitive.
The PS Vita version of last year’s Mortal Kombat reboot becomes a more attractive purchase with each passing week. If extra characters, a new Challenge Tower and an augmented reality stage don’t do it for you, then how about a range of exclusive klassic skins for some of the deadliest ninjas in the game?
The past month has been a quiet time for the PS Vita with no real new releases to speak of. Thankfully the handheld’s release schedule looks a tad healthier for May and June, with games like Mortal Kombat, Resistance: Burning Skies and Gravity Rush all set to make an appearance during this period.
Today Sony released a nonmandatory firmware update for PS Vita, making it the third system update to grace the handheld in ten days. The firmware apparently fixes some issues with camera use in the Japanese PS Vita title Dream Club Zero Portable, which begs the question why the game can’t be patched directly in order to rectify these bugs.
If you downloaded yesterday’s PS Vita firmware update v1.65 then it’s recommended that you replace it with v1.66, now available worldwide. Sony quickly took v1.65 offline yesterday after discovering that it contained a ‘technical fault’.
It’s been a long time coming but the first PS Vita firmware update since the system’s worldwide launch is now live. The update clocks in at 97 MB and adds a couple of new options to the Settings menu along with two other minor enhancements.
I’ve had my PS Vita since the worldwide launch and have used this time to thoroughly explore the handheld’s capabilities. One of the more annoying aspects of the Vita’s current firmware (1.61 at the time of writing) is account switching. Unlike the PS3, content you download from the PlayStation Store is locked to the account from which it was purchased and you can’t switch between accounts on one console without having to first perform a factory reset.
One of the most exciting games coming to the PS Vita in the next couple of months is Mortal Kombat. This is a full port of the PS3 version that includes all the DLC characters released thus far as well as an all-new Challenge Tower that takes advantage of the Vita’s touch and motion controls.
Gravity Rush has been in development for four years, making it one of the most ambitious and expensive PS Vita projects announced so far. Shortly after development on the game began, Japan Studio presented a short concept movie internally at Sony Computer Entertainment for a project with the working title “Gravité” - French for ‘gravity’.
DBNGamers IV was held at Waxy’s in Westville on Friday evening and was the biggest and most awesome get together we’ve had so far. It was great to see so many fellow gamers enjoying the evening’s entertainment as well as each other’s company, and it was personally satisfying for me to see a number of familiar faces including my sister-in-law, old school friends and even a BT Games’ employee who’s helped me out on many occasions at the Pavilion branch.
