PS3 SlimSony has announced that the PS3 Slim has sold 1 million units worldwide in just 3 weeks since its launch.

The new PS3 Slim was launched across North America and Europe on the 1st of September, hitting Japanese shelves a few days later on the 3rd of September. Retailing at $299, the PS3 Slim includes a 120GB Hard Drive, slimmer appearance as well as a reduction in power consumption and fan noise.

PS3 SlimThe PS3 shoots to the top of the Media Create Japanese Hardware Chart this week, selling 151 783 units thanks to the release of the PS3 Slim on the 3rd of September. Last week the PS3 was last on the hardware chart, selling just 1 040 units.

The PS3 sells more than double the DS this week, which has to content itself with second place on the chart with a combined total of 68 728 units. The DSi contributes 60 419 units to that tally and the DS Lite 8 309, both up slightly from last week.

Kidou Senshi Gundam Senki: Lost War Chronicles Box art The latest Mobile Suit Gundam game from Namco Bandai, Kidou Senshi Gundam Senki: Lost War Chronicles, debuts at number 1 on the Japanese Software Chart. According to the latest Media Create figures, the PS3 title sold 178 000 copies in its opening week.

This places it well ahead of Nintendo’s Tomodachi Collection which drops one place from last week to number 2 with 87 000 copies. Interesting to note that the popular DS title has almost reached the million sales mark with life-to-date sales of 977 000 copies.

PS3 SlimChart-Track, a company that tracks, amongst other things, sales of videogame hardware and software in the UK, has revealed to GamesIndustry.biz that following the release of the PS3 Slim in the region, and the subsequent reduction in price of the standard PS3, sales of the console have sky-rocketed by nearly 1000 per cent.

PS3 SlimEurogamer’s crack team of technology experts, The Digital Foundry, have compared the game install times of a regular PlayStation 3 against the new, slimmer variant, the PS3 Slim, and it turns out that the time it takes to install a game onto the PS3 Slim’s hard-drive is not-inconsiderably less than that of the regular PS3.

PS3 SlimThe fellow who tipped us off to the proposed price of the PS3 Slim in South Africa, Marthinus Versfeld from Kalahari.net, has posted another tweet regarding the price for which the online retailer will be offering the slimmer, lighter, 120GB hard-drive wielding PS3.

Yesterday, Versfeld said that while the recommended retail price for the PS3 Slim in South Africa is R3799, Kalahari.net would beat that price, and they have, but only just.

PS3 Slim Marthinus Versfeld at online South African retailer, Kalahari.net, recently posted on his Twitter account regarding the recommended retail price (RRP) for the recently announced slimmed down PS3 in South Africa (which for all intents and purposes will henceforth be known as the PS3 Slim).
