EL33TONLINE: News tag archive: prototype2
Prototype 2 begins with quite a few cut-scenes, and Heller is drafted back into the army to help contain the population and the Mercer virus which is raging through it. Initially, Heller is deemed too psychologically damaged to rejoin the armed forces but, as the situation in the city deteriorates, he is accepted in and is immediately sent out on a suicide mission, which is where Heller comes face-to-face with Mercer who infects him with the Mercer virus.
It’s here that the fun and games really begin!

Free DLC… a hardbound art book… a soundtrack CD… all of this and more is included in Prototype 2’s RADNET Collector’s Edition - not to mention the actual game itself!
With the release of Prototype 2 recently we gave everyone a chance to win this amazing version of the game by asking what mutation would be most useful to you in every-day life.
We had loads of impressive answers but in the end, the prize goes to:
Rockstar’s Max Payne 3 has debuted at the top of Chart Track’s UK Software Sales, taking the top spot in its debut week to become Rockstar/Take 2’s first chart-topper since the release of LA Noire almost a year ago.
505 Games and Rebellion’s Sniper Elite V2 has maintained its position at the top of Chart Track’s UK Software Sales listing this week despite a 38% sales drop, making it two in a row for the brutal, bone-crunching X-Ray shooter.
US sales analyst firm The NPD Group has released its latest report on the state of the country’s videogame industry with data on sales for the month of April 2012, revealing a worrying 32% drop in sales across hardware, software and accessory categories.
Revenue generated in the US videogame industry during the reporting period dropped from $930.9 million in April 2011 to $630.4 million this year, mostly due to a lack of new game releases and an early Easter period, as Prototype 2 and Xbox 360 topped their respective categories.
It is with a smile on my face that I say this as an El33tonline columnist - 2upGamers monthly events are a pleasure to report on. Not only do I have fun at every single event, not only is there always an awesome line-up of guests, as well as an awesome list of announcements each and every time, but I get to meet new people and connect with good friends, and I’m quite confident that this is an opinion shared by many who have attended. In fact, of the friends I convince to come along with me, I don’t even have to ask them to come to the next one as they end up registering before me!
The Prototype 2 live-action trailer has created quite an exciting buzz in the local gaming scene due to two interesting facts. Not only has this trailer – for a game that was one of the most eagerly anticipated titles of 2012, it must be highlighted - been shot right here in South Africa, but it also stars Cape Town professional model Vince Andrews, who portrays the real life likeness of Prototype’s 2 protagonist, James Heller.
Prototype 2 brutalised the competition this past week by becoming the latest top-selling game on Chart Track’s UK Software Sales listing, coming out ahead of FIFA Street, FIFA 12 and Mass Effect 3.
Surprisingly, this is Activision Publishing’s first No. 1 on Chart Track’s all formats sales chart and despite launching on a Tuesday around the world, it still doesn’t match the first week sales performance of the original Prototype, when that game was released in June 2009.
One of the most anticipated titles of 2012 has finally hit South African shores in the form of Prototype 2, and to celebrate the release of this sequel to the 2009 action game, a large and lively group of gamers flooded the Crowne Plaza Hotel in the Johannesburg suburb of Rosebank to attend an exciting launch party, co-hosted by JHBGamers, 2upGamers and Megarom.
When Activision and developer Radical Entertainment made their debut announcement of Prototype 2 with 2010’s gripping Spike VGA trailer, we were shocked to discover that previous hero Alex Mercer wouldn’t star in the next edition of this open-world action adventure series.
As time has gone on, however, we’ve learned exactly why Mercer has been replaced by one Sergeant James Heller as lead protagonist… and we’ve also discovered why Mercer can’t be considered the ‘hero’ he once was made out to be.
Prototype 2 launches around the world tomorrow, April 24th, and when the game hits store shelves, Heller’s quest for vengeance will begin as he hunts, kills and becomes the monster he needs to be in order to destroy Mercer once and for all.
Join us as we take a look at the reveals leading up to this point in Heller’s journey and look forward to the carnage to come!
Version 2.0 of this prototype looks promising…
Is this the last week of relatively empty videogame releases? How much longer do we have to wait until the titles on offer are overflowing on retail and digital shelves?
This week is a little different, however, as it’s probably better that there’s nothing else to attempt to steal our time away from the biggest release of April - Prototype 2!
What other new titles are out this week around the world? Let’s see:
If you’re a fan of open-world action games focussed on adrenaline-fuelled destruction and sporting lavish production values, then Prototype 2 is sure to be on your radar.
This sequel has been in development for three years and the time seems to have been well spent judging by the game’s fantastic visuals and impressive scope. Prototype 2 sees you fill the combat boots of Sergeant James Heller as he uses his newly acquired mutations to enact vengeance on the man who killed his family - Alex Mercer (the original game’s protagonist).
To mark the game’s release, El33tonline and Megarom are giving you a chance to win the awesome Prototype 2 Collector’s Edition - you’ll need to answer a (seemingly) easy question to enter, so make your way to our Prototype 2 Competition page for more information!
In addition, if you’re in Johannesburg or Cape Town, be sure to attend 2UpGamers and JHBGamers launch events this week, April 26th - get signed up and grab details now!
Prototype 2’s protagonist James Heller is out for blood and on a quest to destroy Alex Mercer once and for all - watch below as he demonstrates a new ability the developers at Radical Entertainment have imbued him with - The Pack Leader - as he commands hideous demons to eviscerate all who stand in his way:
The upcoming open-world action game Prototype 2 may be filled with more exploding bodies and fountains of blood than most of 2012’s releases combined, but there’s a softer side to the title, too.
Prototype 2 is out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on April 24th in North America and April 27th in European territories, so you’ve got a little over a month to decide to pick up Activision and Radical’s over-the-top open-world action game.
How will you make that choice?
