Prototype is an open-world action adventure game that seems to test the very boundaries of videogames as we know them. Unfortunately it doesn’t manage to break all these boundaries successfully but, despite its shortcomings, it’s a hell of a good romp.

You play as Alex Mercer, a genetically modified shapeshifter, who wakes up on a morgue table and sets out to find the truth behind his past, no matter what the cost and no matter who dies. Mercer can use his shapeshifing abilities to consume anyone who dares to cross his path, assuming not only their physical likeness but absorbing their powers, skills and, perhaps more importantly, their memories too.

The open-world actioner, Prototype, manages to claim No. 2 during its debut week on sale, while last week’s No. 2, Red Faction: Guerrilla (sales down 31%), moves down to No. 2. Wii Fit (sales up 18%) makes a mini-resurgence, climbing to No. 5 from No. 4 this week, but UFC 2009: Undisputed (sales down 36%) slides down two places from No. 3 last week to No. 5.

A recently released video for the open-world, ultra-violent action-adventure game, Prototype, reveals the top ten reasons for which you have to buy the game when it’s released later this year.

The first reason to have Prototype, #10, is entitled ‘Run and Gun Firepower,’ which is promptly demonstrated with a series of weapon shots that eject an enemy into the air, continuing to launch the enemy over one hundred metres away.

Yes, this is indeed a good reason to play Prototype. Watch the rest of the reasons to have Prototype, releasing at the end of June on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, below:

During their earnings call yesterday, Activision Blizzard revealed their intended release line-up for 2009, including new Guitar Hero games, new franchises and new entries to old franchises.

Activision Blizzard To start, the company intends to release a bevy of Guitar Hero (and just plain Hero) titles this year, including the already announced Guitar Hero: Metallica, a new DS title called Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits, the possibility (and inevitability) of something along the lines of Guitar Hero: World Tour 2, as well as their DJ-inspired title, DJ Hero.

The Blizzard portion of the company has dedicated itself to releasing one ‘frontline’ title per year, although it isn’t yet clear whether 2009’s frontline title from Blizzard will be Starcraft 2, Diablo III or perhaps another World of Warcraft expansion.

As a result of poorer than expected sales for James Bond: Quantum of Solace, the company will be moving the release of the next entry into the James Bond series of games to 2010, to avoid Activision Blizzard’s own titles cannibalizing each other’s sales, as they believed happened with the release of Call of Duty: World at War in a similar timeframe to Quantum of Solace.
