Major Nelson mixes it up this week and provides expanded lists and data to show what the most popular games and downloads are on Xbox LIVE for the past week, and to give “a much better idea what the 23 million Xbox LIVE members are playing,” with a top twenty instead of a top ten.
That doesn’t change the fact that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is still the most played game on the service, however, ahead of Halo 3, the Bad Company 2 demo, Call of Duty: World at War and Fifa 10.
The best selling Xbox LIVE Arcade game, as a result of a Deal of the Week, is Portal: Still Alive, ahead of Trials HD and Castle Crashers, while the best selling Xbox LIVE Indie game is Avatar drop, finally dethroning I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1, with The Impossible Game following in at third.
The full global list of top played Xbox Live games, original Xbox games and top selling XBLA and Xbox LIVE Indie Games follows below, all based on unique users and full versions purchased.
This week’s Xbox LIVE Deal of the Week is something special, and you should at the very least check it out if you are yet to do so: Portal: Still Alive is now available for 800 MS Points, as opposed to the usual 1200 MS Points you would be asked to pay.
This deal is only available to Xbox LIVE Gold members, mind, and for one week only, so don’t miss your opportunity to get the full singleplayer mind-bending first-person puzzle game, as well as 14 bonus maps and developer commentary for the whole thing!
For the experience on hand, 800 Space Bucks is well worth it.

Just a single, solitary game update on the Xbox LIVE Arcade (XBLA) service this week - but it’s a really good game!
Portal: Still Alive, for a meagre 1200 Microsoft Points, is available for your first-person puzzling pleasure. As they are keen to remind us, the original Portal was the winner of over 30 Game of the Year awards, and this new version comes complete with 14 new bonus maps, developer commentary and, obviously, the whole original game that set the gaming community on fire last year.
Also a reminder that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is currently available as an Xbox Original, as well as the availability of a demo for Scene It? Box Office Smash! and a bunch of new Nirvana tracks for Rock Band, all available on Xbox LIVE Marketplace now.
