During a somewhat quiet month for videogame releases, the NPD Group has announced videogame software and hardware sales figures in the US for the month of April, revealing an incredible 26 percent drop in overall revenues for the region compared to the same period last year.

Good news for Ubisoft was hidden in the bleak April report, as the publisher’s Splinter Cell: Conviction topped the software sales chart for the month, ahead of evergreen Nintendo titles and the blockbuster God of War III.

By now it’s clear that Pokémon is here to stay. What some once considered to be a fad has proven remarkable staying power, with four generations of games and two remakes over 12 years, each selling huge numbers. And it’s no wonder – the gameplay is accessible but exceptionally deep, the Pokémon themselves are adorable and the meta-game around collecting them leads to the game selling itself by word of mouth. In my very limited experience of the series I have found SoulSilver to be the most enjoyable Pokémon game I’ve played. If you’re a Pokémon fan don’t miss out on these great remakes, and if you’ve never played before, this is a good time to join in the fun.

NPD GroupMarch saw the release of a number of highly anticipated titles such as God of War III, Final Fantasy XIII, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Pokemon HeartGold / SoulSilver. The sales of the new titles seem to have injected some life back into the videogame industry in the US, with the latest data from US tracking firm NPD Group showing that sales increased by 6% to $1.52 billion in March.

Software sales also recorded an increase, up 10% to $875.3 million, while accessories shot up 11% to $206.8 million. Hardware sales, however, continue to suffer, dropping 4% to $440.5 million.

According to NPD analyst Anita Frazier, “In terms of total revenue, March 2010 is the third best non-holiday month on record behind March 2008 and June 2008.”

Just Cause 2 Xbox 360 Box ArtJust Cause 2 has entered Chart Track’s UK Software Chart this week at No. 1, ahead of double debutant Pokemon SoulSilver at No. 2 and Pokemon HeartGold at No. 4, resulting in one of the biggest shake-ups the chart has seen this year.

This No. 1 position for Just Cause 2 makes up for the original title’s inability to clinch the top spot when it debuted at No. 2 almost four years ago. Square Enix seems to be on a bit of a roll this year, now with its second No. 1 published game in the UK after Final Fantasy XIII achieved the same feat a few weeks ago.
