March saw the release of a number of highly anticipated titles such as God of War III, Final Fantasy XIII, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Pokemon HeartGold / SoulSilver. The sales of the new titles seem to have injected some life back into the videogame industry in the US, with the latest data from US tracking firm NPD Group showing that sales increased by 6% to $1.52 billion in March.
Software sales also recorded an increase, up 10% to $875.3 million, while accessories shot up 11% to $206.8 million. Hardware sales, however, continue to suffer, dropping 4% to $440.5 million.
According to NPD analyst Anita Frazier, “In terms of total revenue, March 2010 is the third best non-holiday month on record behind March 2008 and June 2008.”
Just Cause 2 has entered Chart Track’s UK Software Chart this week at No. 1, ahead of double debutant Pokemon SoulSilver at No. 2 and Pokemon HeartGold at No. 4, resulting in one of the biggest shake-ups the chart has seen this year.
This No. 1 position for Just Cause 2 makes up for the original title’s inability to clinch the top spot when it debuted at No. 2 almost four years ago. Square Enix seems to be on a bit of a roll this year, now with its second No. 1 published game in the UK after Final Fantasy XIII achieved the same feat a few weeks ago.
According to worldwide life-to-date sales data released by Nintendo earlier today, three of the publisher’s titles, namely Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit Plus and New Super Mario Bros. Wii, have all surpassed 10 million units sold for the period of April 1st 2009 to December 31st 2009.
Core Gaming of South Africa has announced that South African Nintendo DS gamers can expect the next iterations of Pokemon, HeartGold and SoulSilver, to release on March 26th in the country, which is exactly in line with games’ release date in the UK.
At participating retailers in North America, and starting February 1st, you’ll be able to pre-order Pokemon Heartgold and SoulSilver for the DS, and if you do, you’ll be eligible to pick up one of two cool looking figurines related to each of the games.
If you pre-order HeartGold, you’ll get a Ho-oh figurine (the orange/red wing-ed bird), and if you pre-order SoulSilver, you’ll get a Lugia figurine (the more emo-esque, greyish wing-ed beast).
The figurines are created by Japanese toy company Kaiyodo, apparently, so you know you’re getting something of quality.

Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver were officially dated yesterday for an unspecified Western region yesterday (if you’re the type who follows those darned press releases), but it’s now abundantly clear that the March 14th release date slapped on the pair of Gold and Silver remakes (with Pokewalker) was meant for the North American version.
After already having been released in Japan to great acclaim (somewhere in the region of three million units in sales, if Kotaku is to believed), the latest entries to the Pokemon series of games on the DS, HeartGold and SoulSilver, have both had Western release dates confirmed for mid-March.
Also confirmed is that both versions will come standard with the Pokewalker, the special Pokemon-themed pedometer that allows you to train a chosen Pokemon while you walk, while the Western box art for both games has also been revealed.
Famitsu is reporting that the newly released remakes of the classic Gold and Silver Pokemon games, HeartGold and SoulSilver respectively on the Nintendo DS, have both gone on to sell nearly 1.5 million units combined in Japan in only two days.
Releasing last Saturday in the region (September 12th), the pair sold roughly 1 480 980 copies combined. Japanese retailers are reporting shortages of both titles.
This week’s Japanese software sales chart is going to look extremely interesting indeed!

Some Japanese TV advertisements for the new Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver games on the DS have managed to wrangle themselves a position on the internet, revealing the kinds of things those of us in the West ‘miss out on.’
First up, though, is a video overview of the new Pokemon games, all in Japanese obviously:
You’re also ‘lucky enough’ to be able to watch a series of three Japanese TV spots for Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver below:
An energised debut trailer has been released for the Pokemon Gold and Silver DS remakes, HeartGold and SoulSilver (no spacing required), and it’s pretty keen.
The trailer shows a little bit of in-game footage, revealing the game’s use of the DS’s 3D ‘capabilities,’ with some cinematic flair and Pokemon battles to get prospective players excited for the duo’s release in the West next year.

A debut trailer has been released for the Pokemon Gold and Silver DS remakes, Pokemon Heart Gold and Pokemon Soul Silver, featuring a host of new graphical features, gameplay situations and usability niceties that the developers have added to the original Game Boy classics.
The trailer also reminds prospective Pokemon trainers that the games are accompanied by the PokeWalker, a pedometer that allows you to transfer one Pokemon over to the device and train up that critter as you walk (in real life, mind you).

Kotaku have managed to get their hands on shots of the Japanese box art for the Fall releasing (in Japan) Pokemon Gold and Silver remakes, Pokemon Heart Gold and Pokemon Soul Silver, for the DS.
Heart Gold and Soul Silver will also come standard with the PokeWalker, a special PokeBall-shaped pedometer that allows you to train up one Pokemon as you walk, converting the number of footsteps you take while holding the device into experience points for your chosen Pokemon.

For the upcoming Pokemon games, Heart Gold and Soul Silver, not only will Nintendo bring a classic Pokemon game up to date on the DS, they’re also bringing a new device, the PokeWalker, to the table that will allow you to train up your Pokemon while you walk.
Shaped as a Pokemon Pokeball, and bundled with copies of the game, the PokeWalker is a special pedometer that allows you to transfer one Pokemon from either of the remakes, via infrared, to the device, which shows up on the screen.
If you hold the PokeWalker as you walk, the number of steps you take will be converted into experience points which will then be assigned to your Pokemon of choice.
Additionally, the chosen Pokemon’s affection for you will grow, while your footsteps will also be converted into ‘watts,’ which will help Pokemon trainers catch wild Pokemon and search for tools, which will then be sent to the game.
More screenshots and details have also been officially revealed, such as the fact that players will be able to choose between either a male or female character as your in-game counterpart, while the character you don’t choose will serve as a support role.
OK, sure, it’s only a YouTube clip at the moment, but it still shows that the remakes of Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver (renamed Heart Gold and Soul Silver respectively) are actually real.
The clip aired on a Japanese television show seemingly dedicated to all things Pokémon, and the presenters get very excited about the footage. It’s looking very similar to the latest iterations of Pokémon on the DS.
