As anticipation begins to swell for the next generation of videogame consoles, so to does the frequency (and even validity) of rumours and speculation regarding this next wave of gaming technology.
Just this year, however, gamers at large have been burned multiple times as we get our hopes up for exciting reveals for Sony and Microsoft’s next home consoles while dreaming about the company’s visions for the future of interactive entertainment.
It’s been confirmed that both Sony and Microsoft will continue to focus on their current generation of technology in 2012, with no talk of PlayStation 4 or ‘Xbox Next’ at E3 this year, but that hasn’t stopped a new round of reports regarding Sony’s next console.
The recent buzz around videogame internet circles has been the reported planned announcements of both the next Xbox from Microsoft, as well as the PlayStation 4 from Sony, at E3 in June this year.
At least one of these consoles will definitely not see a showing at the expo.
What’s been the big rumour doing the rounds this day, January 6th 2012?
Why, nothing less than news surrounding the formal announcements of Sony and Microsoft’s next consoles at E3 this year.
According to a report on industry site Develop, ‘trusted sources’ have confirmed that several of Sony Computer Entertainment’s internal studios are currently working on games for the company’s PlayStation 4.
In an interview with Develop magazine, head of Sony Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida has revealed that the company is currently working on “concepting new hardware” as well as “future platform related activities.”
Only now for the first time, and since the departure of Ken Kutaragi (the ‘father of the PlayStation’) from Sony Computer Entertainment, Sony is working with its impressive array of first-party developers to help design and craft any new videogame hardware that Sony creates, including the next PlayStation, in order to ensure that they, the developers, are given the tools necessary to create the games of the future.
In comments made to Develop, Yoshida said:
