By now, we’ve all read about the hoopla surrounding Infinity Ward’s decision to implement their own online backend infrastructure, known as IWNET, to take care of matchmaking and other miscellaneous services designed to make your Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer experiences a little bit easier and smoother.

PC gamers have cried foul, however, as the decision removes the ability to set up custom, user-run dedicated servers, resulting in a 135 000 signature-strong online petition to convince Infinity Ward to reconsider their implementation of IWNET, to which the faces of Infinity Ward have replied with not-very-promising (for the PC community) comments.

Now, user ‘Lelldorianx’ on Gamer’s Nexus is trying to set up an ‘official’ Modern Warfare 2 boycott, with a list of rules that potential boycotters of the game need to follow in order to make the best impact:

Over the weekend it was revealed that, beginning with the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Infinity Ward would be launching a new online and matchmaking service called IWNet, which would handle and support both the console and PC versions of the game.

There was a bit of an outcry from the PC community, however, after the announcement that IWNet would not allow for dedicated servers hosted by users of the platform, making the running of custom maps and games created by mod enthusiasts virtually impossible, a basic ability that PC game communities have thrived upon since the early 90’s, when Doom popularised the idea of user-made content.

In an effort to encourage Infinity Ward to reconsider their proposed plans for rolling out IWNet across all platforms, and allow fully dedicated servers, an online petition quickly went up, and the response from the community has been staggering.
