This past weekend from September 3rd to the 5th, Penny Arcade’s massive PAX Prime gaming event took place in Seattle and enjoyed a record number of attendees this year, up dramatically over the number of visitors seen during 2009’s expo.
As those of you fortunate enough to be in Boston, Massachusetts today (or on your way there) already know, the East Coast edition of the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) begins a little later today, kicking off three days of gaming and geekdom celebration (in all the right ways!).
The Penny Arcade Expo taking place in Boston this year, better known as PAX East, is all set for the weekend of March 26th to the 28th, and in order to entertain the crowds set to gather at the event, a number of high profile indie game developers and triple-A publishers have been confirmed to be making an appearance at the show, including the likes of Twisted Pixel and The Behemoth, as well as Microsoft, Nintendo and 2K Games.
Also making an appearance at PAX East are a number of nerdcore music acts, including Jonathan Coulton, Anamanaguchi and MC Frontalot, amongst others.
By the way, if you intend attending PAX East, you’d better make it snappy and book your place ASAP. It could already be too late…
The announced (Read: not yet complete) list of music acts and exhibitors for the first edition of PAX East is as follows:
The number of attendees at this year’s Penny Arcade Expo (PAX 2009) has been announced via word from the team’s Robert Khoo, and that number is impressive.
60 750 people attended the gaming and geek-culture show in Seattle over its three day run, which is only marginally up from last year’s attendance figure of 58 500, but is still mightily impressive nonetheless.
The organisers of this year’s Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) have released the full, complete schedule of events, filled to the brim with interesting talks and panels, with a notable keynote by LucasArts/Monkey Island legend, Ron Gilbert.
There are a bunch of other developers and geek culture figureheads taking part in the event too, so head on over here to read the full line-up, or click here to see the schedule outlined in a more visual form (colour-coded and everything!).

PAX 2009 takes place from September 4th to September 6th in Seattle.
Organisers of the annual Penny Arcade Expo, or PAX, have released a long, comprehensive list of companies that will be exhibiting and hocking their wares at PAX 2009 this year, the sixth rendition of the show.
Exhibitors include major game developers and publishers such as Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony, Blizzard and Ubisoft, which means there’s going to be an abundance of yet-to-be-released games on the show floor for people to get their hands on.
PAX 2009 will also play host to panels by respected videogame, comic book and geek culture figures, something called the Omegathon gaming competition, tournaments, the results of the PAX 10 Independent Games Showcase, and more (detailed below). An official statement from Penny Arcade reads:
“PAX IS SO GREAT,” said Robert Khoo of Penny Arcade. “SO GREAT.”
Excellent.

The PAX 10 Independent Games Showcase is a chance for independent game developers to have their games placed on show besides enormous games developers and publishers at the annual Penny Arcade Expo (PAX), and elevate their creations to the same level as those from Nintendo, Microsoft and Ubisoft… at least for a few days, anyway.
After receiving over 150 submissions from indie developers, eager to win such a chance at high level exposure, The PAX 10 judges have chosen the ten winning finalists to be showcased during the sixth annual PAX this year at the Washington State Convention and Trader Center, from September 4th to September 6th.
During the show, the 10 finalists will be judged and a final, overall champion will be chosen. Last year, this honour went to eventual Xbox LIVE Arcade game, The Maw. Robert Khoo of Penny Arcade said of the entries:
The organisers of this year’s Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) have announced that submissions are now being accepted for the independent game showcase portion of the event, The PAX 10.
Independent game developers’ submissions will be judged by a panel of fifty industry experts, including Penny Arcade’s Gabe and Tycho, who will whittle the entries down to only ten.
These ten winners will be announced in July and the creators will be invited to showcase their winning work at The PAX 10 indie showcase at the PAX 2009 Exhibition Hall Sept. 4-6 at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center.
“We were absolutely amazed by the quality and diversity of games submitted in 2008,” said Robert Khoo of Penny Arcade. “I’m excited to see what the community of indie game devs have in store for us this year. Good luck to everyone!”
Indie developers can submit their work now over here - you have until May 9th to do so. You can also head on over to the official PAX site to pre-register for the event, and check out some extra information.
The Penny Arcade Expo or PAX, is now in its fifth year after Tycho and Gabe (Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik respectively) of the Penny Arcade webcomic started the show in 2004, where 1337 people turned up for the event.
This year, the show’s attendance rose to an estimated 58 500, up from last year’s numbers of 37 000 attendees. The projected attendance was between 45 000 and 50 000, so they certainly exceeded their goal.
While this year’s event was held in Seattle, and next year’s event will be held at the same time and same place, an event is planned for Boston and will be dubbed PAX East Coast, held during March of 2010.
Sony has detailed its line-up for the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX).
A post on SCEA’s PlayStation Blog confirmed that PAX attendees can expect hands-on with LitteBigPlanet, Resistance 2, SOCOM Confrontation, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, Resistance Retribution, SingStar, Buzz! Quiz TV and Buzz! Master Quiz.
A subsequent post confirmed that eager fans can get a first time hands-on with Resistance 2 multiplayer and take centre stage with SingStar and Buzz! Quiz TV. There will also be on stage demonstrations of inFamous and level building with LittleBigPlanet.
According to Natalie Behrman, Consumer Events Specialist, “most of these games will be continuously playable throughout the three days.”
If you are lucky enough to be attending PAX, make sure you check out the tournaments that Sony will be holding with PlayStation loot up for grabs.
Microsoft has confirmed its line-up for the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX). You can expect quite a few demos at the Microsoft booth including Gears of War 2, Project Origin and Halo Wars.
Look out for demos of Gears of War 2, Project Origin and Popfly on Friday while Saturday brings more Gears of War 2, Popfly and Project Origin as well as Halo Wars and the new Xbox experience and a Gears of War 2 signing session. Sunday mirror’s Saturday’s line-up.
It is interesting to note that Microsoft has allocated two ‘TBA’ slots on both the Saturday and Sunday at 4:30pm. What could they possibly have up their sleeve? Stay tuned because the chaps over at Gamerscore blog promised that other titles would be available to play in the booth. So far we have confirmation that Gears of War 2 will be playable.
