Initial reports are trickling in that Super Smash Bros. Brawl has sold 500 000 copies on its opening day in Japan. Despite the release date for this highly anticipated game being delayed several times, eventually landing in the land of the rising sun on the 31st of January, gamers have flocked to the shops to get their hands on a treasured copy of the next installment in this beloved series. Although these reports have yet to be confirmed, if they are true it will mean SSBB had an 80% sell through of its initial stock and that stores are probably sold out now.
This news comes from a Japanese blog which posted what it claimed were leaked Famitsu sales figures. If these figures are correct it will mean that Nintendo has snatched another title (albeit from themselves), with SSBB taking the crown of biggest opening day for a Nintendo console game ever. Currently the crown belongs to the N64’s Zelda: Ocarina of Time which recorded 386 234 units in its opening week.
Although somewhat overshadowed by the simultaneous release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the 31st of January, Devil May Cry 4 is also reported to have recorded very good opening day sales.
The PS3 version is rumoured to have chalked up first day sales of 140 000, a 60% sell through. The Xbox 360 version faired less well with 30 000 copies sold on opening day, a 60% sell through.
Make sure you tune in this coming Thursday when the Media Create figures for the week ending the 1st of February will be released.
Until then head over to a list of the Top 10 PS3 titles in Japan based on first week sales according to Japan-Game Charts.
If the figures are correct, Devil May Cry 4 may become the top selling PS3 game in terms of first week sales, placing it ahead of the likes of big guns Minna Golf 5, Dynasty Warriors 6 and Gundam Musou.
