One of the biggest PS3 exclusives to launch in a long while - Starhawk - was released yesterday in the US and will be crash landing in European territories this Friday, May 11th. Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) has announced that gamers who pick up a copy of Starhawk will be able to download a free version of the PSone Classic Warhawk from the PlayStation Store by redeeming the included Online Pass.
Over the last couple of years we’ve grown accustomed to seeing console titles with online multiplayer bundled with an Online Pass in an effort to curb the used games market.
Some games’ Online Passes are more lenient than others, but I’ve never heard of any Online Pass that allows you to freely play the multiplayer component of a title - until now.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and THQ have jointly announced that the recently revealed Saints Row: The Third online pass promotion has been extended to Australasia, Europe, the UK, South Africa and other EMEA (Europe, Midde-East, Africa) territories.
What online pass promotion? Let’s take a step back.

If you’re one of those people who shake their head in disapproval when there’s any mention of the ‘online pass’ system then you’ll be pleased to know that Driver: San Francisco is now effectively free from its shackles.
Following on the heels of EA, THQ, Warner Bros. Interactive, Codemasters and other publishers’ initiatives to encourage consumers to buy original copies of games at retail, Ubisoft has today confirmed that the French publisher will include redemption codes in its future titles to allow access to online features and multiplayer.
In a report on consumer site VG247, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has confirmed the existence of the recently surfaced ‘PSN Pass’ system – a game specific programme that will see future first-party Sony titles require a code for users to access online features.
Publishers EA and THQ have both become fairly adept recently at ensuring gamers buy an original retail release of their games in order to gain access to features such as online play as well as additional content with the companies’ use of an ‘online pass’ system.
In short, every retail game comes standard with a code you’ll need to enter online to get into that title’s multiplayer mode, for example, and if you don’t purchase an original copy of the game (and instead buy it second-hand, say), you’ll need to buy that code to access the multiplayer.
According to a recent retail listing for a supposed Resistance 3/320 GB PlayStation 3 bundle, Sony and Insomniac will be implementing a similar ‘online pass’ system with the pair’s upcoming blockbuster shooter.
It was being reported that with Crysis 2, Crytek would buck EA’s new trend of including ‘Online Pass’ into the online multiplayer portions of the publisher’s games (requiring you to enter a provided code to unlock multiplayer, or pay $10 if you bought the game second-hand), but it’s now been confirmed that the upcoming first-person shooter extravaganza will indeed not make use of the system.
