Nintendo is usually the first of the big three publishers to respond once the NPD data is revealed, and this month is no exception. Except this month they are not only celebrating the performance of the DS but found themselves in the unusual position of defending the Wii’s rather dismal sales for February.
The publisher kicked things off by boasting that the DS sold just over 613 000 units for the month, setting a new US record for portable video game sales in February according to NPD data. This tally is up from the previous record of 597 000 units set by the DS in February 2009.
Nintendo has released a cinematic and monologue-heavy trailer for the publisher’s upcoming action adventure game, Metroid: Other M, as Samus herself lets the audience in on a few personal secrets, accompanied by some intriguing visuals.
If news from Nintendo’s recent media summit is anything to go by, we can expect quite a bit of narrative and cinematic grandeur in Metroid: Other M when it releases a little later this year on the Wii, but for now, let the trailer tease you with its hidden plot points below:
While there are going to be plenty of highlights for both game developers and the videogame press at large to talk about at this month’s Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, event director Meggan Scavio has confirmed that there will be no keynotes delivered by the big three console manufacturers, Microsoft, Nintendo or Sony, in an effort to move the conference away from “announcing things” and towards “[focussing] on developers.”
This year at GDC, the biggest headline event will be a keynote delivered by industry legend and game designer Sid Meier, as opposed to any new hardware announcements by Sony or Nintendo, if Scavio can help it.
Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, Scavio said:
Nintendo fans, it’s time to get super excited, as new details regarding Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid: Other M spill out from Nintendo representatives Nate Williams and Nate Bihldorf… was there a ‘two for one special’ on ‘Nates’ or something, Nintendo?
Regardless, the two Nintendo employees speak about all the new features that players of both Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid: Other M will be able to get their hands on when the games release later this year, with some new glimpses at gameplay footage spliced in-between all of the exciting talk.
Watch below and get excited!
After North America had its turn to receive a slew of release dates for a bunch of highly anticipated Nintendo games, now it’s Europe’s turn to find out when those selfsame games will find their ways into stores across the region.
Without further ado, let’s get right to it:
During Nintendo’s media summit in San Francisco yesterday, the publisher confirmed that their larder, more feature-rich handheld, the DSi XL, will be releasing in North America at the end of March for the price of $189.99, complete with pre-installed software.
After the surprise announcement that Super Mario Galaxy 2 would release in North America on May 23rd, brand new sets of lively screenshots and gameplay footage has been released in celebration of the date, while a few new details have surfaced to fill us in on what we can expect from this new adventure.
Nintendo and Team Ninja have unleashed a batch of new screenshots showing off all facets of Metroid: Other M, including glimpses at what look to be both third- and first-person gameplay, as well as some classic side-scrolling platform running.
The developers have also unveiled further details regarding Metroid: Other M, which is said to contain a story that is more “revealing” and “personal” than previous entries to the franchise, while this particular title has been marked as the direct successor to Super Metroid.
The latest piece of release date news to escape from the Nintendo Summit today is that the Team Ninja-developed Metroid: Other M will release in late June in North America for Nintendo Wii.
More news emerging from Nintendo’s media summit in San Francisco today has revealed the expected North American release dates for two anticipated titles exclusive to Nintendo consoles, namely Sin & Punishment 2 for the Wii and Picross 3D for the DS.
Fresh news coming straight from the Nintendo Summit in San Francisco today has revealed a solid release date for Super Mario Galaxy 2 on the Wii for the region of North America - a date which is a lot sooner than anyone expected.
Shigeru Miyamoto, the Nintendo game designer best known for his creation of Mario Bros, will receive the Academy’s Fellowship at this year’s GAME British Academy Video Game Awards (BAFTA).
Miyamoto is currently the General Manager of Nintendo, Analysis and Development, although he is also referred to as the “father of modern video games” and the Steven Spielberg of the gaming world. Not surprising given his creation of Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Nintendogs, Wii Music and the aforementioned Mario Bros.
Forecasting and Analyzing Digital Entertainment (FADE) has released its annual report for Nintendo’s WiiWare and Virtual Console services for 2009. And it’s all good news with the firm estimating that both platforms generated $125 million in revenue for 2009. The Virtual Console just pipped the WiiWare service with $66 million in comparison to $59 million.
FADE is a strategic market research and consulting firm that strives to provide “data for a digital world”. It monitors Steam, Xbox Live Arcade, WiiWare, Virtual Console and mobile markets and provides reports in order to help small developers to make informed decisions about these potential sources of revenue. It hopes to offer reports for the PlayStation Network and DSI Ware soon.

The new colours will be available on the 14th of February, bundled with the new Wii Motion-Plus accessory, for $49.99.
Check the new colours out in all their glory below, and then decide whether we should ask Nintendo to bring them here.
