EL33TONLINE: News tag archive: movie

There are plenty of CG movies released every year but very few of them cater primarily to an older audience. I try to watch the films which fall into this category (from Resident Evil: Degeneration to Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children) partly for their entertainment factor and partly because they offer a tantalising glimpse into the future of video game graphics.

Tomb Raider Art 1 Small Following news of a new Resident Evil movie, word doing the rounds today is that a new Tomb Raider film is currently in the works after production company GK Films recently acquired the movie rights to the classic videogame franchise.

While this new movie will miss the release of the next game in the series, there is talk that the big screen adaptation of Tomb Raider will follow a similar route to Crystal Dynamics’ title which aims to act as an origin story (or ‘reboot’) of sorts.

Jeri RyanAn excellent and dark (if a little exposition-filled) live-action video emerged on the ‘net yesterday featuring characters from the classic Mortal Kombat franchise, and clearly had something to do with Mortal Kombat thanks to the words ‘Mortal’ and ‘Kombat’ appearing right at the end to clue us in.

Details were a little shaky as far as what the video was meant for, seeing as how it clocked in at over seven minutes (too long to be a simple trailer) and it included known actors (too important to be in a simple fan film).

Thankfully, one of the actors involved in the project, Jeri Ryan, (who portrayed Sonya Blade near the end of the video, and would be better known as ‘Seven of Nine’ from Star Trek: Voyager) made things a little clearer in a series of Twitter posts:

[Update] One of the actors involved in the project, Jeri Ryan, has explained a bit more about the Mortal Kombat video, revealing that it is a short film to convince Warner Bros. to make a full-length film. [End of Update]

Mortal Kombat Dragon LogoA new, seemingly high budget (or, ‘with a budget’) live-action video has recently appeared on Mother Internet featuring well-known (and ‘known’) actors playing the parts of characters such as ‘Baraka,’ ‘Reptile,’ ‘Jax,’ ‘Sonya Blade,’ ‘Johnny Cage’ and ‘Scorpion.’

To an average film viewer, these names would be nothing more than B-movie aliases for B-movie actors starring in a B-movie action… movie.

To videogame fans however… ah, videogame fans would find these names quite alluring, and attaching them to actors (well-known or not) is a sign that it’s time to get excited about the possibility of a new Mortal Kombat movie.

Prince of Persia: Sands of TimeGamers worried that the upcoming Prince of Persia film would fall prey to the videogame to film adaptation curse can breathe easy.

The first trailer for Jerry Bruckheimer’s film adaptation of Ubisoft’s ‘Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time’ has surfaced and it clearly shows that producer Bruckheimer has spared no expense, holding true to his word that it will not be one of his smaller productions.

Disney’s adaptation of Prince of Persia is being directed by Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Four Weddings and a Funeral) while Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard, Jordan Mechner (Prince of Persia creator) and Boaz Yakin wrote the script.

Footage from Jerry Bruckheimer’s upcoming film adaption of Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has surfaced on the internet.

We already know that Jake Gyllenhaal has beefed up quite considerably for his role as the Prince, but this footage reveals that Bruckheimer believes Gyllenhaal can tick a couple of extra things off his list as well: handsome – tick; great shape – tick; brilliant actor and talented – tick!

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Check out the YouTube clip below for more insight into the film with an interview with Bruckheimer as well as clips from the film. Filmed in dusty Morocco, you will see Gyllenhaal fighting his way through over-crowded streets as Dastan and staring into the eyes of love interest Princess Tamina (played by Gemma Aterton from James Bond Quantam of Solace).

Rumours are being kicked up about a new Tomb Raider movie currently in the works, including how it plans to re-imagine Lara Croft’s story and background.

Tomb Raider MovieMovie consumer site Empire is reporting that Warner Bros. is currently working on the third Tomb Raider movie, following the ‘OK but not great’ franchise movies of 2001 and 2003.

Of some interest is the idea that the third movie would be a ‘re-imagining’ of the Tomb Raider series, essentially ‘rebooting’ the franchise and changing Lara Croft’s origins, introducing a love interest and setting up a new antagonist.

There is apparently no cast, writer or director just yet, so this will probably be something to ‘look forward to’ rather than expect any time soon.

These rumours are circulating amidst the news and ongoing developments of Warner’s bid to acquire Eidos, the holder of the Tomb Raider license, as well as a slump in the sales performance of the latest Tomb Raider game, Underworld.

If you are a Smallville fan you will recognise 25 year old actress Kristin Kreuk who plays Clark Kent’s first girlfriend Lana Lang in the popular TV series.

Kristen KreukKreuk also landed the role of Chun Li in the upcoming Street Fighter live-action movie. When asked about her martial arts skills, she replied “Pretty decent. I did karate, dance and gymnastics when I was growing up so I was good at the wire work for the fight scenes.”

She spent five weeks training with stunt co-ordinators for the Street Fighter role. “I don’t know if I could kick your ass if we met on the street but I’m decent at looking like I’m good at fighting.”

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li is scheduled to be released in 2009.

Following on from the expected success of the upcoming Max Payne movie, 3D Realms has enlisted the help of Scott Faye, the producer of that film, to work on the movie adaptation of another franchise created by 3D Realms, Duke Nukem.

Duke Nukem 3DFaye is already knee-deep in the creation process, as he divulged, “I’m working diligently at making a Duke Nukem movie scenario that will live up to the character and its import in the video game world. As is the case with all of my game adaptations, I’d rather not make the movie than make a poor adaptation.” Uwe Boll he ain’t. Faye will be working with 3D Realms head honcho, Scott Miller, as well as working through Miller’s Radar Group, a company dedicated to creating original intellectual property designed to take full advantage of adaptations to other media, such as film.

Created in the early 90’s as a 2D platformer and then upgrading to a ‘3D’ first person shooter called Duke Nukem 3D, the Duke franchise is still waiting for it’s fourth installment, Duke Nukem Forever, now in development for over 10 years. Duke Nukem 3D, on the other hand, is to see a re-release on Microsoft’s Xbox Live Arcade service later this year.

Meanwhile, Max Payne the movie only releases on October 17th across the US, but actor Mark Wahlberg and director John Moore have already expressed interest in a sequel to the film, while 20th Century Fox is said to be committed to the movie, which will receive a large opening as well as a strong marketing drive. Here’s hoping it’s a success.
