The latest news from Midway is that 1.8 million copies of Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe have been shipped worldwide.
In fact, it has sold so well that Midway have already started working on the next version. Ed Boon, Mortal Kombat co-founder and creative director of Midway, had this to say: “We’re already hard at work on our next version of Mortal Kombat, and look forward to being able to reveal more details in the future.”
“Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was the result of countless hours of hard work by many people, and seeing the game surpass the million-seller plateau makes it worth all the effort,” he continued.
Midway also revealed that MK vs DC Universe has shattered a number of the publisher’s internal records. The game was the most pre-ordered MK title in the company’s history and over 3.6 million MK vs DC matches have been played online worldwide for the PS3.
Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe is currently available for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Check out our review to see why we thought the game has “advanced in many aspects but taken several steps back in other departments.”

It goes without saying that Midway has been attempting all kinds of things to fit their 2D brawler into the 3D arena since the launch of the original PlayStation and one has to applaud them for at least trying. From puzzles in Deception or sheer quantity in Armageddon they always try something to breathe life into a very old series now. This time they have put up the Bat-signal and called in the Dark Knight for help with the rest of the DC team at your disposal including Superman, The Flash, Wonder Woman and The Joker.
The title says it all as Midway has struck a deal with DC Comics to pit the likes of Scorpion, Sub Zero or Liu Kang against your favourite DC Comic Hero. Now, you might be thinking to yourself that you have experienced this initiative before… if so you are very much correct. Do you remember Marvel vs Capcom? (The sequel on the SEGA Dreamcast standing out as the best in that franchise) No? Why the hell are you reading this? You totally lost out! One of the reasons for the success of that game was that Capcom managed to blend the comic heroes’ abilities into the fighting system while making them balanced and distinct. Midway had a go at this formula and it seems to hit and miss in many instances.

If you’ve been playing Mortal Kombat games for any amount of time, you would have heard the bass-booming sounds of the announcer reverberating through your speakers, commanding you to ‘Finish Him!’ or commending you on a ‘Flawless Victory!’
‘The Voice’ can say other things as well, as an interview with Maxim soon proves. Hernan Sanchez, the man behind the voice, has been convinced to utter sayings related to the series but of a different nature altogether, such as ‘Tickle Him!’ and ‘Obama Wins, Flawless Victory!’ Pretty funny stuff.
Click through below to hear Sanchez rumble through some other sayings, such as ‘Epic Fail!’ and ‘Forgive Him!’

Midway’s Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe pitts famous Mortal Kombat warriors against popular superheroes from the DC Universe for the first time ever.
Mortal Kombat began in 1992 and is now Midway’s leading fighting franchise. The 9th edition in the series promises not to disappoint with two new fighting systems: FreeFall Kombat enables players to battle in mid-air while falling from one arena to the next while Klose Kombat gives players a brutal up-close view of the fight.
The game features iconic fighting arenas from both universes, including Metropolis and Gotham City from DCU and Hell and Graveyard from MK, as well as never-before-seen combo arenas that blend both universes.
Choose a character from the MK or DC Universe, each featuring their own signature attacks and finishing moves, before testing your mettle with the new single player mode. Players will even be able to take the battle online.
The latest characters to join the fight include Sonya Blade and Shang Tsung from MK and Catwoman and The Flash from DC. They join Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Liu King, Batman, Superman and Shazam.
Take a look at the latest game play video to see how the game is shaping up.
Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe is scheduled to be released on the Xbox 360 and PS3 across South Africa this October. Head over to worldscollide.com for more information about the game.
Midway are already touting the sales numbers of their next Mortal Kombat, before it’s even been released. Midway European marketing director, Leonie Manshanden said:
“We have very high sales expectations for MK vs DC. I can’t tell you the exact number, but historically if you look at the franchise, every new MK on a new platform has done best. It’s always enjoyed that upward trend. With this installment we really think we’re going to set another record.”
Manshanden also called MK vs DC a ‘genre definer.’ “There are things in there you can simply not do in other games. The press has witnessed all the stuff the DC universe brings to the title and are really buzzing about it.”
Hopefully there are more innovations then the revealed free-fall fighting and degradation of clothing.

Scorpion and Sub-Zero cracking skulls with Batman and Superman! Sounds like fun? This is Mortal Kombat VS DC Universe!
Players will be able to face off against each other, on- or offline, using characters from the Mortal Kombat or DC universes, each character with their own signature attacks and finishing moves, all while taking advantage of new fighting mechanics; Freefall Kombat, allowing players to continue smashing each other while falling, and Klose Kombat, where players are able to visibly see the progressive damage (such as bruises and torn clothing) they are inflicting on one another.
You will also be able to choose locations from the respective universes, such as Gotham City or Metropolis, all serving to allow you to progress through two, unique, intertwining stories, either from the Mortal Kombat universe or DC universe, penned by comic writing talents Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray (Countdown - Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters).
More info and screenshots to come!
Midway has announced that Mortal Kombat warriors and DC Superheroes will battle it out for the first time in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.
The game sees the two universes merging following a “cataclysmic force,” leading to the heroes and villains of Mortal Kombat waging war against the superheroes of the DC Universe. Scorpion, Sub Zero and the warriors of Mortal Kombat will face off against Batman, Superman and other DC Superheroes for the first time.
The game will feature signature attacks for both sides and a new fighting system including Freefall Kombat and Klose Kombat along with dynamic multi-tiered environments. Choose your side by picking either a MK or DCU character before jumping into the new single player mode that features an intertwined story and two unique perspectives. The storyline has been written collaboratively between the MK creative team and top comic scribes Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray.
