Metroid, the third franchise in the oft-mentioned Nintendo “big 3,” has long been overshadowed in hype by the other two in the three – Mario and Zelda. Although the quality of the Metroid games has always been high and they have a committed fanbase, they just don’t generate the same level of excitement in the broader gaming public. In the case of Other M this was particularly the case – Metroid Prime fans seemed a little concerned about this new direction while old-school Metroid fans seemed concerned about the game quality and the whole cut-scene and talking Samus concept. These fears are only fears that the game is not exactly what fans of previous games want. As such they are somewhat well-founded, but this doesn’t mean the game isn’t good.

The NPD Group has released its sales report of the videogame industry in the US for the month of September, sadly the first of its kind to not include exact unit sales.
NPD no longer reports the unit sales figures for the Top 5, neither does the Top 10 show a single title on a single platform but rather the combined sales of an individual title across all platforms.
“Surely the new Nintendo machine will leave you all with your mouth open.”
Bold words from legendary Nintendo designer and Metroid co-creator, Yoshio Sakamoto, but he must surely believe those words if he’s willing to spill them on the public stage.
2K Games’ mobster-themed action adventure game, Mafia II, has managed to remain at the top of Chart Track’s UK Software Sales listing for the second week in a row, even though overall sales of the game dropped by 23% compared to the week previous.
Metroid: Other M released in North America yesterday. This much you know. Metroid: Other M also releases in Europe and the UK this Friday, on September 3rd. This much you also know.
But did you know for certain when Metroid: Other M would release in South Africa? Or were you just hoping it would launch on the same day as other PAL regions?
Hmm. That’s sloppy ‘release date harvesting,’ my friend.
While we may have already watched and enjoyed this Metroid: Other M trailer in Japanese, we now get to watch it, enjoy it and understand it as it’s been re-released in English. As a result, it makes a whole lot more sense, and you’ll actually be able to appreciate and comprehend the actions flickering before your eyes on-screen.
The action is looking intense in Metroid: Other M, and with a few measured doses of story exposition here and there, it might just be yet another classic entry to the franchise.
This could get hectic:
Releasing quite soon in the US (August 31st) and shortly after that in Europe and the UK (September 3rd), Metroid: Other M for the Wii looks better and better with every showing, and while this new story trailer is in Japanese, you don’t need to speak a foreign language to appreciate the action on display.
Unless you speak Japanese. Then you can appreciate it fully.

Nintendo Europe has unveiled an extensive release schedule detailing what games we can expect to see on the Wii and DS in the coming months, up to and including the third quarter of this calendar year (‘July to September’ to its friends).
Highlights of the list include… uh, let’s see here… Metroid: Other M, Dragon Quest IX, Last Window… maybe PES 2011, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions and Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock… perhaps Batman: The Brave and the Bold… possibly Def Jam Rapstar… I don’t know. I’m no psychic.
Pick your way through the list of Wii and DS games coming to Europe over the next few months below:
Nintendo has just revealed a European and UK release date for the company’s forthcoming action adventure game for the Wii, Metroid: Other M, currently in development at Team Ninja (Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive) and set to feature “stunning action and a moving personal story” in a Metroid adventure “like no other.”
The European release window for Nintendo’s Metroid: Other M has just got a little smaller with a report on MCV revealing in which month Wii gamers in the region can expect to get their hands on the action adventure title.
Nintendo just wrapped up their E3 press conference and be assured that it didn’t disappoint! In addition to revealing the new Nintendo 3DS, the publisher showed off Wii Party and Metroid Other M and even managed to pull off more than a couple of surprises with the unveiling of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Mario Sports Mix, Kirby’s Epic Yarn, Donkey Kong: Country Returns, Kid Icarus: Uprising and Goldeneye. We also got a taste of Just Dance 2, Disney’s Epic Mickey, Golden Sun: Dark Dawn and Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies.
Nintendo’s full year fiscal results were released late last week, and despite the publisher’s continued dominance in the videogame market, the numbers revealed a 22 percent decline in sales, to $15.24 billion (¥1.43 trillion), as net profits fell 18 percent to $2.44 billion (¥228.6 billion) and operating incoming dropped 36 percent to $3.80 billion (¥356.57 billion).
In another case of ‘no smoke without fire’ in the videogame industry, the rumour has become fact as Nintendo confirms the release delays for Metroid: Other M and Sin & Punishment: Star Successor in the US, with new projected release dates announced for the pair.
While this delay will most likely affect the release date of Sin & Punishment in Europe (where it will be known as Successor of the Skies, and is/was due for a May 7th release), no prior release date had yet been announced for Metroid: Other M in the region, so technically it hasn’t been delayed outside of North America.
Nintendo has released an extensive release schedule for its line-up of games planned to launch in Europe during the next few months, from now until June.
Some release dates we know about, like Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Sin and Punishment: Successor of the Skies, while the announcement that Jam With the Band for the DS has been delayed internationally (despite a previously announced release date) puts that game’s launch under some scrutiny.
Curiously, Metroid: Other M for the Wii isn’t on the list (it’s dated for June 27th in North America), which means the title will probably only release outside of the second quarter of this year in Europe.

Nintendo has finally gone and done ‘The Right Thing’ and released a gameplay trailer for its upcoming action adventure game, Metroid: Other M, featuring real live gameplay captured from the title to show us what it’s all about, instead of CG scenes filled with exposition.
To hammer the point home, the video also has inserts showing how certain parts of the game will control, as you’ll either be required to use the WiiMote in the classic NES position, turned on its side, in specific situations (basic run and gun gameplay) or as a pointer (during first-person shooting and scanning for puzzles).
