After a strange and tangled period of development for Capcom’s announced Megaman Universe, and very murky and unimpressive showings of the game, it’s just been announced that the publisher has cancelled work on the title.
Capcom veteran and game industry legend Keiji Inafune recently announced his departure from the company at which he has spent the last 23 years making games - an announcement that surely must have come as a huge blow for every development team that he was currently working with at the publisher.
One of the projects that Inafune had been working on, and had expressed extreme enthusiasm in, was Mega Man Legends 3, a project the luminary said had remained a dream of his since the last game.
Now that Inafune isn’t at Capcom anymore, and can no longer work on Mega Man Legends 3, who is left to take his place?
Behold, a new trailer for Capcom’s Mega Man Universe featuring in-game footage from the title, as well as looks at the game’s level editor and character selection screen.
Lo and behold, it’s not very impressive, which is worrying.
Isn’t this the game that is supposed to “deliver the most creative Mega Man experience yet” and meet “the highest expectations of Capcom fans”? If it’s lucky, it might just meet my lowest expectations.
I’m seriously hoping that the dated visuals and gameplay we’re seeing in the footage is just some kind of placeholder, but somehow I doubt it. You can see and decide for yourself with the latest gameplay trailer for Mega Man Universe below:
Almost a month and a half ago now, Capcom released a trailer for the publisher’s recently announced Mega Man Universe title.
The trailer was, in a word, unsettling, and featured a host of classic Capcom characters running and jumping around the room of some random kid. It was very 80’s. Very oldschool MTV.
Now though, Capcom’s Keiji Inafune has arrived on the scene to rectify the situation, and to give Mega Man fans a glimpse at the real Mega Man Universe with clips of in-game action.
After an age of speculation and rumour, Capcom finally let its loyal subjects know that a game by the name of Mega Man Universe is indeed currently in development, due for release via Xbox LIVE Marketplace and the PlayStation Network.
While no concrete information was revealed, it was promised that his new game would stick to Mega Man’s strengths while adapting to the tastes of the modern audience.
This all happened last Friday. More recently, however, Capcom released a debut teaser trailer for Mega Man Universe, and it’s… bizarre. Why Capcom? Why did you have to go and do this?
Capcom has been teasing a big announcement for some time now, and finally we get to see what the company has in store for its fans. The big announcement is…
Mega Man Universe!
A new game in the long-running Mega Man series of games, and planned for release over Xbox LIVE and the PlayStation Network, Mega Man Universe will be “a revolutionary take on the seminal classic, setting course for a new chapter in classic gaming.”
It’s classic, but also revolutionary!
The headline basically says it all: A Mega Man-themed DOOM total conversion by a fellow named Mike ‘CutmanMike’ Hill has been unleashed onto Mother Internet with a fully-featured multiplayer mode, sporting the addition of bots and a singleplayer section to practice with before ‘jumping online.’
Game Watch have posted a whole bunch of new screenshots which were released at Nintendo conference today in Japan.
Included among them is some shots of Kirby Superstar DS, which may or may not be a straight remake of the SNES game. Also particularly exciting are shots of the newly announced Fire Emblem DS which looks to be a remake of an early Fire Emblem game from the NES/SNES era. Square Enix’s games are looking beautiful as always (except for the DS Kingdom Hearts with the odd name). Anyhow, this is one amazing batch of games - check them out if you love gaming.
Why do I single out Kirby you may ask? Kirby is awesome, that’s why.
Here are the names of the games shown on that page in English and in order so you at least know what you’re looking at:
