Nintendo’s Rhythm Tengoku Gold for the DS tops the Japanese software chart for the week ending 17/8, selling 137 000 units to move up from last week’s number 3 and bring the title just shy of half a million sales at 480 000 copies.
Sega’s Phantasy Star Portable for the PSP drops to number 2 after topping the chart for the previous two weeks. It sells 74 000 copies, bringing its life-to-date sales to 564 000. Square Enix’s Dragon Quest V for the DS climbs two places to number 3 with 74 000 copies.
Nintendo’s Wii Fit moves up from last week’s number 8 to fourth with 47 000 copies while Mario Kart Wii races up four places to fifth with 36 000 copies. Both titles increased by roughly 20 000 sales this week, pointing towards a possible hardware spike. Also interesting to note is that Mario Kart Wii has passed Super Smash Bros. Brawl in terms of life-to-date sales, Mario Kart Wii stands at 1.69 million while SSBB is roughly 1.66 million.
Nintendo’s Fire Emblem: New Shadow Dragons and the Blade of Light for the DS drops to number 6 after debuting at number 2 last week. It sells 35 000 copies while Nintendo’s Daigasso! Band Brothers DX re-enters the Top 10 at number 7 with 24 000 copies.
Namco Bandai’s Taiko Drum Master 2 for the DS is another new re-entry, finishing eighth with 20 000 copies, while Konami’s Powerful Pro Baseball 15 for the PS2 moves up two places to number 9 with 19 000 copies. Nintendo’s Wario Land: Shake It! for the Wii re-enters the Top 10 at number 10 with 18 000 copies.
Apart from the DS beating the PSP to top the hardware chart in Japan this week, the latest Media Create figures showed that the Xbox 360 sold five times as many consoles as the previous week. It also beat the PS3, selling over twice as many units, 24 962 to be exact.
The boost in sales can be largely attributed to the release of Tales of the Vesperia, which sold 108 328 copies in its opening week, earning it number 4 on the software chart. Tales of Vesperia took the title of biggest first week for an Xbox 360 game in Japan, with the previous best first week of software for the Xbox 360 being Blue Dragon with 80 000.
Clearly most retail outlets did not anticipate the increased demand for the 360. It is being reported that Yodobashi Camera in Akihabara, a large electronics store in Tokyo, sold out of all the versions of the Xbox 360 console last week Thursday. The question is whether they will stock up for the coming week and whether the 360 can retain its lead over the PS3 or will plummet to the bottom of the charts again. At the moment Amazon of Japan is sold out of two of the three versions of the Xbox 360.
To say that this week’s Japanese hardware chart was above average in the excitement department would be a severe understatement. To begin with the DS beat the PSP to become the best selling console in Japan for the week ending the 10th of August, and, perhaps more exciting than that, the Xbox 360 beat the PS3, selling almost five times as many units as it did last week and over twice as many units as the PS3 this week.
For those of us who watch the charts, this is the kind of week that keeps us coming back to scour the results week after week…after week. The PSP has ruled the roost for many weeks now, but five DS titles in the Top 10 seem to have done the trick to push the DS to the top with 60 434 units. Nintendo’s handheld moves up roughly 3 000 units while the PSP drops 2 680 to finish second with 58 501 units.
The Wii drops marginally but manages to hold on to third place this week with 38 506 units. The Xbox 360 climbs above the PS3, selling an impressive 24 962 units this week, up from last week’s 5 359. The boost in sales is thanks to the release of Tales of the Vesperia, clearly a system seller, which debuted at number 4 on the software chart with 108 328 copies. These sales figures earn Tales of Vesperia the title of biggest first week for an Xbox 360 game in Japan. Media Create data shows that the previous best first week of software for the Xbox 360 was Blue Dragon with 80 000.
The PS3 has to content itself with fifth place, selling slightly more units than last week with 9 673. The PS2 comes last with 8 503 units.
This week’s software chart was a cracker, so don’t miss it and compare this week’s hardware rumblings to last weeks if you like.
See you next week!

Sega’s Phantasy Star Portable for the PSP has topped the Japanese software chart for a second week. According to the latest figures from Media Create, Phantasy Star Portable sold 148 230 copies, bringing its life-to-date sales to just shy of half a million at 490 000 copies.
Nintendo’s Fire Emblem: New Shadow Dragons and the Blade of Light for the DS debuted at number 2 with 144 905 copies. It seems the series has not lost any of its popularity since the first installment was released on the Famicom in 1990. Nintendo’s Rhythm Tengoku Gold for the DS falls one place to number 3 with 130 412 copies.
Namco Bandai’s Tales of Vesperia for the Xbox 360 debuted at number 4 with 108 328 copies, earning the Xbox 360 a rare appearance in the Top 10 as well as the title of biggest first week for an Xbox 360 game in Japan. Media Create data shows that the previous best first week of software for the Xbox 360 was Blue Dragon with 80 000. If you take a look at the hardware sales for the week you will also note that Tales of Vesperia is clearly a system seller, increasing Xbox 360 hardware sales from 5 359 units last week to 24 962 this week.
Dragon Quest V from Square Enix drops two places to number 5, selling 72 598 copies in its fourth week of release to cross the one million sales mark. According to Media Create, Dragon Quest IV, released in November 2007, reached one million sales in 6 weeks while Dragon Quest V reached the milestone in just four weeks.
The PSP has once again topped the Japanese charts, although the Nintendo DS has closed the gap between the two quite considerably.
The PSP sold 61 181 units, while the DS followed closely with 57 398 units. This means just 3 700 units separate the two handhelds. The PSP dropped substantially from last week’s 67 452 while the DS climbed above last week’s 56 968 total.
The Wii is selling steadily at 41 109 while the PS3 dropped slightly to 9 508 units. The PS2 came next with 9 045 while the Xbox 360 continues to climb up the sales ladder with 5 359 units.

The remainder of the Top 10 is dominated by new entries, starting off with the PS2 version of Konami’s Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu 15 at number 2 with 84 000 copies and the Wii version new at number 10 with 22 000 copies. This week saw the PSP taking a massive lead in the hardware race in Japan. According to the latest figures from Media Create it sold 74 024 units for the week ending the 20th of July, roughly 17 000 units more than last week.
The spike in PSP sales is due to Sony releasing a new Metallic Blue PSP bundled in two new limited offer PSP packs. on the 17th of July, clearly increasing the demand for Sony’s handheld. Cleverly timed on the part of Sony since Square Enix’s Dragon Quest V for the Nintendo DS was released this week, selling a whopping 644 000 copies but did not have much effect on the sales of DS hardware at all.
The DS did experience a slight boost in sales this week, it sold 54 531 units, roughly 6 000 units more than last week. However, with DQV topping the software chart with over half a million sales it was expected that DS hardware sales would increase quite dramatically, perhaps even beating the PSP.
The Wii came third this week with 40 803 units, followed by the PS3 with 11 253 units. Both these consoles recorded a marginal drop in sales this week, in comparison to last week’s 41 768 and 12 458 units respectively.
The PS2 sold 9 535 units while sales of the Xbox 360 increased marginally, up from last week’s 3807 units to 4 208 units this week, an impressive feat given that not one Xbox 360 game appeared in the Top 50 for this period.
If you missed it, head over to this week’s software chart.
